🗓 Happening NOW: SAIFAC Conference 2024 on DEMOCRACY, EXCLUSION AND PARTICIPATION. The South African #Constitution provides for the right to #vote in section 19; and this right is couched in language which limits it to South African citizens. On the other hand, other civil and #political rights found in the Constitution of South Africa – such as the rights of #freedom of expression and association – are not limited to citizens. In a selection of other countries, too – including #African countries, such as #Malawi and #Namibia – non-citizens have a conditional right to vote. 💡 Against the backdrop of South Africa's seventh democratic elections, and on its 30th anniversary of democracy, a few questions relating to the right to vote arise and the conference aims to unpack these questions and more. #KAS4Democracy #democracy #politicalparticipation #elections2024

The #BTI2024 is out! #Democracy is on the decline - Out of 137 surveyed nations, only 63 are democracies; but there is hope! #Brazil & #Poland stand as examples where voters have reversed the democratic erosion. BTI finds lowest political participation in 1/3 of 137 countries surveyed. Elections less free in 25, rights curtailed in 32, and expression controlled in 39. But the key to defending democracy is resilient #civilsociety. #Brazil, #Kenya, #Zambia show its pivotal role in fair elections and integrity. Let’s review the newly released campaign video by the European Parliament for the #EuropeanElections2024. The election campaign addresses the creation of the EU as a peace project after World War II and has one main message: peace and democracy require an active effort from everyone. Here are our five take-aways from it: 🟠 The campaign contains one clear call to action: Use your vote (and don’t take democracies for granted) 🟠 Individual interviews personalise the message and make it more memorable 🟠 Hope can be a powerful mobiliser, but remains quite abstract 🟠 It doesn’t address concerns of specific voter groups 🟠 Despite a representation across age and gender groups, other minority groups (among others, people of colour) are absent from the video What do you think about the EU Parliament’s campaign? → find out more on https://lnkd.in/dj2nD_Wa #useyourvote #europeanelections #EU #2024elections #democracy #democraticvalues #inclusivity

The French and British elections are proof that it is time to change “Brussels So White” — both in terms of representation and action. The results in both countries challenge Europe’s dominant narrative that centrists must move further and further to the right — and adopt a politics of exclusion — to appeal to voters.

As Marine Le Pen heads to a victory in the French elections, it's an end of the era for President Marcon, and democracy based on liberal values in France, it seems. Turning the tide against rightist ideologies will not be possible because Le Pen remains flexible on issues that matter, such as abortion. Is the historic moment when Europe goes right wing finally upon us? Polls indicate a clear victory for prized protege Bardella. The path ahead seems clear for France, and dark for vanguards of liberalism. #liberalism #democracy #macron #lepen

As Australian citizens, Muslims, albeit a small percentage of the total population, living in this democracy have the freedom and the responsibility to be true to their principles when engaging in politics and standing up for justice. In fact, this role has been made easier by the growth of alternatives to the major parties. In the Anglosphere the two-party system has led to a situation where elections are no longer giving voters a meaningful choice between well-thought-out alternatives to pressing national problems like housing, poverty, education, health or international political problems — Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen. In Australia Muslims can play a role in the emerging alternatives to the major parties by supporting independents and smaller parties that might even hold the balance of power and by voting against any party or candidate who supports genocide. 🔗 Read more: #muslimvote #auspol #palestine #labor #ALP #liberals #LNP #voting #elections
