Anna Mareschi Danieli, vice chairwoman of #Confindustria #Udine, spoke last January 18, 2024 at the 54th annual meeting of The World Economic Forum in Davos #WEF24 “I have a different perspective: the users point of view, that in my opinion is very important because hydrogen has to be competitive. Producing hydrogen requires energy, which is not abundantly available, especially in Europe, not to mention Italy. We face a real issue of breaking even on costs. Hydrogen can be used only when we have electricity in excess, but however it will always be cheaper to use it directly since producing hydrogen itself requires electrical energy, this means that were we to use hydrogen we would reduce the overall efficiency of the process. The issue is that although the steel industry is already at the forefront of hydrogen and we could thus effectively reduce CO2, we are still, dependent on the costs and availability of energy. Unless figures as when the man went to the moon are invested for energy availability, thinking about energy neutrality is not credible. It is continuously said that industry must invest in this field, but in our sector, for example, we are ready. Direct Reduction plants that currently use natural gas could switch to hydrogen tomorrow. Our thesis is that this battle cannot be won by imposing a carbon tax. Winning is not possible through taxation. This battle can only be won by sourcing low cost energy. What we need to educate about, and immediately, is not to waste resources because we know the world has limited ones. If #energy is a central theme, we must talk about a public/private alliance with a common energy policy. A scalable example is the transnational Hydrogen Valley between #FVG, #Slovenia and #Croatia for a shared energy policy, specifically on #hydrogen”

Hydrogen: Industrial policy is SME policy   Our first meeting in Berlin as part of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber's Strategic Capital Networking with Juergen Friedrich, Ministerial Representative for International Hydrogen Projects at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, clearly showed that Germany and Austria have similar interests, even if the proportions are different. For Austria, Germany is a powerful factor in EU policy. Germany is interested in Austria's contribution to international hydrogen projects such as "Underground Sun Storage 2030" and "Underground Sun Conversion".   Dr. Friedrich has been personally commissioned by Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck to develop the hydrogen infrastructure and value chain for Germany. Funding programmes and initiatives such as the "European Hydrogen Bank" or "H2Global" should make this possible. We need cross-border storage capacity and competitive prices. EU funding programmes must be tested for feasibility and continuously developed. This includes improving existing tendering mechanisms.   After all, Europe's energy supply as a whole is at stake. Although we already have a high level of dynamism, we need more speed. Procedures take too long, which jeopardises the ability to plan. Investment decisions are made outside the EU and their damaging effects are not felt for years. By then it is too late. We need to overcome national differences and work together regionally to counter these developments today. If we weaken our industrial potential, it will have a massive impact on SMEs. Europe has voted. And although the election results of extremist parties in some European countries are very worrying, there is also good news. A large majority of Europeans voted for democracy, for openness, tolerance, and a sustainable, innovative Europe. This is an important sign because there are big challenges ahead. One of the greatest is the transition to a sustainable, green economy. Green hydrogen will play a decisive role in this industrial transformation. Yet, recent studies show Europe is in danger of losing the race to industrializing hydrogen technologies, albeit being a global innovation leader. That is why we need an ambitious agenda supporting green hydrogen for the upcoming legislative term: #1 Industrializing Innovation: Europeans are technology leaders in hydrogen, but we must get better at bringing sustainable technologies to market. A new industrial deal should complement the ambitious goals of the Green Deal to promote entrepreneurship and innovation. #2 Shifting towards Gigawatt Scale: Hydrogen is key to decarbonizing processes from producing steel to fueling chemical plants. To create the corresponding European green hydrogen economy as soon as possible, we need to step up our ambitions. It is time to move our hydrogen projects from Megawatt to Gigawatt scale. This should also be reflected in the EU’s support and funding efforts. #3 EU Funds for the European Hydrogen Value Chain: Countries across the globe use strategic investments to strengthen their domestic hydrogen value chain. This one-sided market support creates distortions on a global level. That is why we also need to prioritize our local value chain in EU efforts and keep our industry competitive. #4 Tackling the Implementation Gap: The roads from project planning to execution are too complex and too slow. We need to prioritize projects, speed up approval processes, and digitize bureaucratic procedures. The coming years will be decisive to convert the EU’s green technology leadership into sustainable economic and job growth. The European institutions should make it a political priority to help create the green hydrogen ecosystem our industry will need very soon. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck just personally handed over the 72.5-million-euro grant notification for our IPCEI project Green Hydrogen @ Blue Danube to our CEO Daniel Teichmann in Berlin! The Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and IPCEI Hydrogen specifically aim to promote the market ramp-up of green hydrogen by linking European hydrogen projects that will generate positive spill-over effects across the EU. We are very thankful for receiving this funding grant by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz and Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie, represented by Ministerial Director Markus Dr. Wittmann. It will significantly accelerate our mission to provide the missing link to a global sustainable hydrogen economy. In our project Green Hydrogen @ Blue Danube, we are building the first industrial-size LOHC hub in Southern Bavaria by 2028 to release up to 1,800 tons of green hydrogen per year to supply industrial off-takers in the Danube region and for possible pipeline injection. Minister Habeck emphasized: „By promoting hydrogen projects, we are taking an important step towards a climate-neutral and sustainable economy in Europe and beyond.“ We look forward to contributing to the decarbonization of industry, supporting the ramp-up of the hydrogen market and building a blueprint for a green hydrogen import chain with our innovative LOHC technology! 💚 (C) BMWK / Andreas Mertens #LOHC #greenhydrogen
