VA Provides Job Transferability Maintaining a career while relocating due to Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders can be difficult for military spouses. Internal transfers are an option for those employed with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Having signed the 4+1 Commitment, VA aims to help military spouses find and maintain meaningful employment. This includes facilitating job transferability or reassignment to vacant, funded positions for which they are qualified. To facilitate a transfer within VA, a vacant funded position must be identified, and the employee must meet the requisite qualifications to be considered. VA has more than 1,300 facilities across the Nation and U.S. territories, which allows for greater job transferability and/or reassignment options. If you’re considering a VA career or reassignment, the Department’s Veteran and Military Spouse Talent Engagement Program (VMSTEP) can help. VMSTEP provides Veterans, transitioning Service members, and military spouses with assistance to develop competitive applications and secure employment with VA. These services include: Federal resume support and revisions. Interview preparation and advice. Guidance on dressing for success. Recognizing this, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a groundbreaking initiative to support this community. VA Awards $5M in Grants: Through the first-of-its-kind Veteran and Spouse Transitional Assistance Grant Program, the VA is awarding $5 million to 13 organizations dedicated to providing employment-based resources and tools. This is a great article that explains one of the largest issues with military transition - underemployment. “Nearly one-third of veteran job seekers are underemployed, a rate 15.6% higher than non-veteran job seekers.” The study noted, “This higher rate of underemployment may result from the transition process itself, which often results in veterans taking sub-optimal employment in order to replace income immediately after service, particularly in situations where transitioning service members have families to support and cannot afford an extended job search or educational period.” So now what?
