At a recent conference, someone asked me about sign on bonuses. His question was heartfelt, filled with some emotion seeking answers. He expressed frustration because applicants would accept the job, only to leave a few weeks later after receiving the bonus. After questioning him a bit, I recommended that maybe a sign on bonus is not the right fit in his situation. Should you offer a sign-on bonus? Job Boards are much like an Apple Orchard When you understand that most job boards are search engines, you will want to know the rules of search engine optimization for those boards. You are more likely to produce fruit on the tree that is much better quality when you learn and follow the rules of optimization. In an apple orchard, the farmer wants to protect the hard work and dedication that has been put into place to keep the trees safe from harm, allowing them to produce quality fruit worth picking. Can you imagine people entering the orchard and ripping off the fruit, destroying branches and ruining the trees for the next season? Just like an apple orchard, the job boards want to protect their job seekers from scam artists and other harmful efforts that can ruin the experience.
