Helping industry with sustainability improvements, achieving net zero goals and helping UK businesses meet people and safety objectives and compliancy.
Who's excited for the start of UEFA Euro 24? ⚽ To ensure that the next 4 weeks are all about great football, team spirit and hopefully no detrimental impact on productivity, absenteeism and workplace harmony, Make UK's legal experts have put together a really useful guide for HR professionals, people managers and business owners. I'll put the link to the full article in the comments but here's some of the headlines for any business to consider during the tournament: 1. Be clear about your game plan - it's reasonable to anticipate an increase in holiday requests - will these be authorised or are you expecting 'business as usual'? 2. Consider offering flexibility - could be a good way of increasing staff morale 3. Keep your eye on the ball - is there an opportunity to watch the games at work? - could improve team spirit 4. Beware of banter - seemingly always on the HR agenda but could be a real issue during the tournament as friendly debate crosses a line - is now the time to refresh your employees on your company's DEI policies? 5. Avoid injury time - is there an increased risk to your operation from a H&S perspective if people are celebrating the night before? 6. The 'sickie' - again reminding everyone of your policies in this area may discourage those that have forgotten to book the day off - is today a good day to do this considering the first England game is on Sunday? As always, this isn't about taking anything away from the enjoyment of the tournament but this summer is packed with great sporting events and businesses need to be prepared. Please feel free to read the full article for helpful advice or call one of our team on 0808 168 5874 for further help.

Many employees will be looking forward to sporting fixtures taking place this summer, such as UEFA Euro 2024 and the Olympic Games. But what are the pitfalls for employers and how can these be avoided? • UEFA Euro 2024 kicks off on Friday 14 June and runs until the final on Sunday 14 July in Berlin. Whilst the Olympic Games take place from 26 July to 11 August in Paris (handball, football and rugby take place from 24 July). • Making arrangements in advance for managing sporting events in the workplace can help to keep staff motivated, maintain productivity and avoid unauthorised absences or lateness. • Organisations may want to consider allowing employees to watch the action during break times or listen to commentary on the radio, where appropriate. • Implementing a Major Sporting Events Policy can be beneficial to set out the organisation’s approach to these situations, including holiday requests relating to the event, unauthorised absence, following the event at work and internet and mobile phone usage. • Employers may receive conflicting requests from employees working during these times for annual leave. Regardless of whether employees want time off to watch or attend sporting events, or for other reasons, such requests should be dealt with fairly and consistently. • Reminding employees before the event of expected standards of behaviour and the dangers of ‘banter’ should help to reduce the risk of instances of discrimination and ensure that the workplace atmosphere remains positive.

The biggest challenge facing the sporting events industry (and large events in general) is the lack of focus on quality HR, disregard for respectful HR practices and a lack of an E2E solution for all the valuable people that make events happen. The events industry is a very 'throw-away' industry where governing bodies refuse to recognise the intellectual property they have built up during events and then re-invent the wheel each time an event ramps up. Events and governing bodies should have an imbedded team of core dedicated resources and a dedicated HR management team to ensure that they can ramp up and ramp down seamlessly. Instead what often happens is that they throw-away what they have and then re-start using contract HR resources that no nothing about the intricacies of events and nothing about the human element that is required when bringing staff on from all over the world, whether it be guiding them through visa processes, tax requirements, assistance in finding accommodation and the list goes on. #eventsindustry #netball #fifaworldcup2026 #uefaeuro2024 #worldcup2026 #atptour #sportingevents
