The 2024-2025 aid year has delayed the start of the financial aid cycle. As a result, financial aid teams are facing short-term pressure to implement effective communications surrounding FAFSA delays and inform students and families during the decision-making process which can feel complicated and intimidating. Just finished our weekly meeting with our financial aid partners and wish that I had better news to share. Here are the overall #FAFSA filer rates as of 2-16: Illinois Fall 2024 50,321 Fall 2023 86,378 (-36,0157 filers to date) Iowa Fall 2024 12,127 Fall 2023 17,620 (-5,493 filers to date) Iowa is closing the gap, but the much more populous Illinois is not. How about the #DepartmentofEducation use some of that $50m to encourage students to file the FAFSA!!! Also, remember friends, we have no clue whatsoever how many FAFSAs have been directed to our institutions yet. Why can't the #DepartmentofEducation turn the institutional dashboard on, so we at least have a sense for how many FAFSA have been directed to our institutions. #fafsfiasco #emchat #FAFSA #FAFSAsimplifcation #highered #highereducation #admissions #collegeadmissions #collegeadmission #financialaid

For those that aren't aware - FAFSA Simplification is one of the initiatives I'm managing and things like this are the items that keep me up at night. It's a huge undertaking for the Department of Education, reform long overdue, and in the big picture - should be celebrated. HOWEVER. The Dept of Ed has admitted they made a bit of a "whoopsie" with the new FAFSA that went live (and y'all, it was a ROUGH live) on 12/31. It forgot about inflation. Institutions still don't have the results of these FAFSAs, and we were supposed to get the results (ISIRs) by 1/31. Does it hurt students to still release ISIRs with data we know is inaccurate? Does it hurt students to delay ISIR delivery until they get it right? (Many families cannot make informed, financial decisions without this!) Also, for perspective on those just slightly outside the FA processes - even when we receive the ISIRs, every institution is going to take some time before delivering any packages to students. These are not light switches we flip, they are massive commercial liner airplanes that require a long list of checklists, switches, controls, and management to get it off the ground. Thank you, Justin, for speaking on the need for grace - and that it is a two-way street. Eternally grateful for this insight while I continue to eat, breathe, sleep (or not sleep!) FAFSA Simplification from National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA).
