As we celebrate International Women's Day 2024, I'm taking a moment to reflect on my journey in the #STEM industry. Over the past 14 years, I've been deeply involved in the fast-paced world of #IT & #Digital. From delivering impactful services to setting up technical teams and driving transformative projects, it's been quite the ride. Yet, despite these achievements, there's this persistent feeling of being on the outside, especially in a male-dominated environment. While my male colleagues have been supportive and complimentary of my work, the lack of female role models has been noticeable. Having more women in senior positions is crucial not just for diversity's sake but also for inspiring others to aim high. Climbing the ladder in management has its challenges, especially for women. The usual markers of success often favour numbers and profits over softer skills. But let's not overlook what women bring to the table, like empathetic leadership. Being able to understand people's perspectives and factor in the human side of decision-making is invaluable. In the world of #IT & #Digital, where user experience is key, empathetic leadership is vital. Being able to adapt systems to meet human needs is what sets successful tech solutions apart. There something about being surrounded by supportive women in the workplace that sparks a joy which bubbles up inside me and warms me to the core. Yesterday was a special one as I joined a panel of inspirational people from around Hitachi (big shout out to Gemma Lane who pulled this together) to talk about some of the challenges that women can face in the workplace, and how we can #InspireInclusion in the #tech industry to support and advocate for this years theme for #IWD Introducing the discussion was Andrew Barr, President of Hitachi Europe, alongside Charmaine Naicker, and Julie Kratz from Next Pivot Point who hosted the session. Joining me on the panel was (and no it's not just women! 🤯): 🌟 Yaeko Higaki, Vice President at Hitachi Europe gave insight into her career journey and how the opportunities outside of Japan arose.l. 🌟 Anna Price, Commercial Director at Hitachi ZeroCarbon talked about some of the platforms which have been established to promote honest conversations about people, equality, diversity and inclusion. 🌟 Tim Olton, Fleet Director at Hitachi Rail contributed with his take on the key challenges often faced in attracting young people and particularly inspiring women and young girls. 🌟 Sophie D. ACIM, Client Manager at GlobalLogic who spoke about her personal journey in the Fin Tech industry with a specific focus on launching a networking forum. 🌟 Yasmina PASSERI Passeri, Senior Project Manager at Hitachi Solutions Europe shared why is allyship so important to championing diversity and cultivating an inclusive environment. 🌟 Joe Morris, Chief Information Officer at Hitachi Vantara spoke about why encouraging diversity of thought and role modelling for inclusion throughout Hitachi is so important. 🌟 I also spoke about how important it is to have the ability to be different in the workplace and to have that difference accepted and celebrated. Reflecting on yesterday's conversation, I'm filled with pride to be reminded of the incredible impact supportive networks can have on our careers, and how valuable it is seeing relatable, authentic conversations happening around key topics, to engage and inspire action in others.
