Uzbekistán & ACCESS Health International (AHI) pave the way to eliminate Hepatitis C. Our Regional Director, Dr Hala Zaid (former Egyptian Minister of Health and Population), met with Uzbekistan's esteemed Ministry of Health, led by Minister XUDAYAROV ASILBEK ANVAROVICH. The discussions focused on a multifaceted approach to eliminate Hepatitis C. AHI offered its expertise in building local capacity, advocating for the cause, and aligning efforts with the World Health Organization's elimination strategy. A key element is partnering with Uzbekistan's esteemed Institute of Virology. Additionally, establishing joint task forces and conducting operational studies were explored. An exciting possibility emerged: leveraging Egypt's strong pharmaceutical industry to secure access to essential medications. The discussions even ventured into the potential for a combined Uzbek-Egyptian task force and the creation of manufacturing facilities within Uzbekistan. This collaboration has the potential to revolutionize public health in Uzbekistan. We at AHI are thrilled to move forward with these promising developments! More evidence that bCPAP is lifesaving for children with severe pneumonia and hypoxemia - this time from Ethiopia, courtesy of partnership between Armauer Hansen Research Institute and icddr,b Bangladesh. And this was a locally-made bCPAP! Main findings: 1240 children (620 in hospitals with bCPAP vs 620 in hospitals with low-flow oxygen). 5/620 children in bCPAP group had treatment failure vs 21/620 children in the low-flow oxygen group. 6 children died during hospital stay, all of whom were in the low-flow oxygen group. No serious adverse events were attributable to bCPAP. #MHClimateActionProgram conducted a series of informative sessions in multiple villages across Hafizabad, Pakistan. These sessions were aimed at enlightening communities about essential health and hygiene principles. By providing valuable knowledge and raising awareness, Muslim Hands played a crucial role in promoting the well-being of these communities. #Healthhygiene are fundamental aspects of human life. However, in many rural areas, access to proper healthcare and knowledge about hygiene practices is limited. World Health Organization National Institutes of Health Pakistan (NIH) The sessions covered a wide range of topics related to health and hygiene. Community members were educated about the importance of handwashing, proper sanitation practices, and the prevention of common diseases. They were also provided with information on nutrition and the significance of a balanced diet for overall well-being. These sessions were conducted in a participatory manner, allowing community members to actively engage and ask questions, ensuring a better understanding of the topics. One of the key strengths of Muslim Hands Pakistan' approach was their focus on community involvement. By conducting these sessions in the villages themselves, they were able to reach a larger number of people and make the information more accessible. This approach also fostered a sense of ownership among community members, empowering them to take charge of their own health and They also distributed hygiene kits to the communities, which included essentials such as soap, toothbrushes, and sanitary napkins. This practical support complemented the knowledge shared during the sessions, enabling community members to immediately implement the learned practices in their daily lives. The impact of Muslim Hands' initiative was evident in the positive response from the communities. People expressed gratitude for the valuable information they received and the practical support provided. Many community members reported improvements in their health and hygiene practices, which in turn led to a decrease in the incidence of common illnesses. 🌍 Togo has become a global leader in reaching key NTD milestones, as evidenced by the elimination of Guinea worm in 2011, the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in 2017, the elimination of sleeping sickness in 2020, and the elimination of trachoma in 2022. 🇹🇬 Togo is known for championing the importance of sustainability and signed a sustainability plan in 2021 which focuses on strengthening of health systems and integrated interventions through a participatory approach among all NTD partners. 📣 Join the webinar on 11 June and learn how the country is gradually approaching elimination of onchocerciasis. We are excited to share this pre-print of our Scoping Review of Cholera Elimination Efforts in Zambia. This is the first of several works we hope to publish based on the lessons learnt from this outbreak and beyond. Despite known evidence of the risks from insufficient safe water supplies, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), the protective effects of oral cholera vaccines, and a Roadmap from the GTFCC, there is a continuous increase in cholera outbreaks on the continent. With an increasing frequency related to climatic conditions and unplanned urbanization, it will be important to adopt a decentralised approach to cholera control in Zambia. There is a continued need to advocate strongly for multisectoral interventions aligning health and WASH investments. Enjoy this foray into the challenges and lessons from the last 10 years of cholera control efforts in Zambia.

🌍 📣 Major breakthrough ❗A clinical trial in Sudan has found a shorter, safer, and more effective treatment for post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL). medicines for africa (mfa) welcomes a major advancement in the treatment of post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis, a stigmatizing skin disease.  The new regimen reduces hospitalization days by over 50%. It is also child-friendly and it can be delivered in primary healthcare facilities. Furthermore, it mitigates the safety risks associated with long antimonial therapy. The new approach has up to 98% cure rates and it promises to transform the lives of many, children in particular. The number of admissions to the Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre in El-Geneina Teaching Hospital, supported by MSF, has doubled from January to April 2024. Initially, the hospital had 20 beds; this number was increased to 34 in mid-March, and subsequently to 50 beds in April 2024. In response to malnutrition increase, MSF launched community door to door screening for malnutrition in villages distant from El Geneina, where abandoned health facilities underscore the urgency for the population. In May 2024, MSF outreach team visited locations such as Jabal Moon, Sirba, Beida, Habila, and Fora Baranga, where they conducted nutritional screenings, treated severe malnutrition, assessed rural healthcare facilities, and distributed medical and nutritional supplies. This period marked an increase in consultations, admissions, and overall workload, likely due to the lean season and a spike in malnutrition cases. 👋 Know more: https://lnkd.in/e9dwBGeG
