📢 Breaking Down Barriers: Ensuring Global South Representation in AMR Discussions An important reflection from the recent UN High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): We must address the structural barriers preventing Global South participation in crucial international discussions. Challenges observed: • Short registration windows affecting visa processes • Limited access despite confirmed registrations • Lack of hybrid participation options • Arbitrary exclusion of important voices As we move forward in addressing antimicrobial resistance, ensuring diverse perspectives and inclusive dialogue is crucial for developing effective global solutions. #PublishedToday | Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is already among the top 10 global health threats. "If AMR is going to impact our present and future, then we, the young people, should be most concerned. We have to combat AMR, prevent AMR, and engage youth," said Mayowa صديق Akinpelu MD, Chair of African Youth Antimicrobial Resistance Alliance Task Force. Mayowa was speaking at the launch of a #YouthManifesto for the United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (UNHLM on AMR) on 26th September 2024. This youth manifesto has been prepared by a consultation process facilitated by the Quadripartite Working Group on Youth Engagement for AMR, shared Dr Philip Mathew of the World Health Organization (WHO) AMR Awareness, Campaign and Advocacy team (on LinkedIn), who was present at the launch of the youth manifesto. "If we do not stop AMR, we the youth, will be suffering its catastrophic impact when we are adults of the day. We have to avert this challenge," said Nahashon Gicheru, a member of Quadripartite Working Group on Youth Engagement for AMR. ⭐️Read more insights from: 🔸Thomas Joseph, head of World Health Organization (WHO) AMR team 🔹Rhema Hooper, a student representative of College of Health, Lehigh University 🔸Dr Salman Khan, is a trainee at government-run Grant Medical College and JJ Hospital Mumbai in India ⭐️Daily GM Kashmir, India (full newspaper page, 21 May 2024) https://lnkd.in/gKgJVhPd ⭐️CNS https://lnkd.in/gXVqGXKh #AntimicrobialResistance #antimicrobialresistanceawareness #AMRAwareness #AMR #Antimicrobial #antimicrobialstewardship #drugresistance #globalhealth #globalhealththreat #healthsecurity #pandemicpreparedness #WHA #77WHA #WorldHealthAssembly #UnitedNationsGeneralAssembly #UnitedNationsHighLevelMeeting #UnitedNationsHighLevelmeetingonAMR #UNHLM #UNGA #UNHLMonAMR #UNHLMAMR

[PUBLISHED IN PRESS 🎊🎊] Re-published article in the Journal of Preventive Medicine: Research & Reviews, published by the Foundation for People-Centric Health Systems (FPHS)-Wolters Kluwer, with a process time of five months. This review was conducted by analysing the nine attributes of the surveillance system according to Updated Guidelines for Evaluating Public Health Surveillance Systems. Information was collected using various databases by setting keywords and the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that 67% of surveillance system implementations used sentinel surveillance and 33% used epidemiological studies. Surveillance system activities: 83% used active and passive surveillance, whereas 17% used only passive surveillance. The adequacy assessment found that 50% met the attributes of surveillance systems in Nigeria, Indonesia and Pakistan, whereas 50% did not meet the attributes of surveillance systems in Ghana, Australia and Ethiopia. This variability was due to geographical differences, the number of informants and experts, the level of collaboration and the health policies of each country. It is recommended that surveillance systems should aim to meet these nine attributes from the design to implementation stage. The article can be accessed at the following link: Adnyana, IMDM; Utomo, B; Eljatin, DS; and Setyawan, MF. Developing and Establishing an Attribute-Based Surveillance System: A Review. Preventive Medicine Research & Reviews, February 13, 2024. DOI: 10.4103/PMRR.PMRR_54_23. https://lnkd.in/gy8GmXk5... Thanks, my partner, M Frendy Setyawan Hopefully, this article can provide information related to the evaluation of infectious and non-communicable disease surveillance systems in Indonesia. #surveillance #emergingdisease #tropicaldisease #COVID19

Taming AMR in #Africa: Data as the Weapon Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) silently threatens hospitals across Africa. When microbes defy drugs, #publichealth is endangered. #Datamanagement emerges as a potent weapon in this crucial battle. AMR's Devastating Impact Globally, the #WorldHealthOrganization estimates 700,000 annual #deaths from AMR infections, projected to soar to 10 million by 2050. Africa's vulnerability arises from limited access to clean water, sanitation, and quality antibiotics. AMR renders common infections untreatable, leading to prolonged #hospital stays, heightened healthcare expenses, and increased mortality rates. Data Management: A Shield Against AMR Data management serves as a game-changer by: - Tracking AMR Trends - Improving Antibiotic Stewardship - Surveillance and Outbreak Control A Real-Life Example: Saving Lives in #Ghana The Ghanaian Ministry of Health's national AMR surveillance system collects data on antibiotic use and resistance nationwide. Analyzing this data identifies high AMR areas, guiding targeted interventions to combat the issue. The Benefits: Measurable and Life-Saving Implementing data management solutions in African #healthcare systems can lead to: - Reduced #Mortality Rates - Lower Healthcare Costs - More Effective Public Health Policies Data Management - A Critical Investment Data management is not a luxury but a necessity for African healthcare systems combating AMR. By leveraging data's power, African countries can save lives, cut costs, and ensure a healthier future for their citizens. #datamanagement #healthcare #africa #AMR #antibioticresistance #publichealth #lifesaving #USAID #ehealth #WHO

It has been a great honour to support Indonesia in developing its national health sector strategy on antimicrobial resistance - being the 1st country to adapt the World Health Organization People-centred core package of #AMR interventions to the country level. The strategy will be launched on 26 March 2024. It will strengthen the health sector response to #AMR and the priorities will feed into the update of the Indonesia national action plan on #AMR. AMREF and GSK are set to co-host a side event at #wha77 to address the urgent global health crisis posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly acute in low—and middle-income countries. With Africa projected to bear the highest burden of AMR-related deaths by 2050, coordinated strategies and collective action are critical. The session will spotlight insights and gather inputs to bolster AMR action across Africa. As part of the "African Leadership for AMR Action" initiative, a 13-month endeavour, we aim to strengthen locally led AMR programs informed by a region-wide landscape analysis. Discussions will focus on priority strategic information and the design of a messaging framework, culminating in the formation of a regional action group. By convening high-level stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector, we aim to align on key priorities and mobilize support for AMR response.
