🌟 Advocating for Strategic Innovation and Sustainable Development in Hong Kong! 🌟 Today, I am sharing my letter to the Chief Executive of HKSAR, urging the relocation of the proposed HKU Global Innovation Center (GIC) from Pok Fu Lam to the Northern Metropolis. This proposal not only addresses significant community concerns but also aligns with our city's long-term vision for innovation, economic diversification, and sustainable urban development. 📊 Key Figures (based on Town Planning Board’s website): • 250 representations in support (6.8%) • 3,428 representations objecting (93.2%) These numbers unequivocally demonstrate the community's strong opposition to the proposed GIC location at Pok Fu Lam. By situating the GIC in the Northern Metropolis, we can better align with the strategic goals to be set out in the upcoming 2024 Policy Address. 📊 Key Points: • Environmental Protection: Protecting over 2,000 trees and the habitats of rare species like the Yellow-crested Cockatoo. • Alleviating Traffic Congestion: Preventing further strain on Pok Fu Lam’s already overburdened infrastructure. • Preserving Heritage: Safeguarding the rich cultural and historical fabric of Pok Fu Lam. • Job Creation and Talent Retention: Establishing the GIC in the Northern Metropolis will create jobs and attract global talent. • Enhanced Connectivity: Leveraging planned infrastructure developments like the Northern Link for better accessibility. • Environmental Sustainability: Operating within state-of-the-art, eco-friendly facilities in the Northern Metropolis. The Centre for Liveable Cities and The Seoul Institute (SI) co-organised the Futureproofing Ageing Infrastructure roundtable in May 2024, with participants from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) (URA), Housing & Development Board (HDB), and JTC Corporation (JTC), along with representatives from Seoul Housing (SH). 🌍 Cities are increasingly recognizing that justice must be at the heart of sustainability transitions. While we have many visions of the just city and the sustainable city, we lack clear visions of what a city that jointly pursues social justice AND sustainability objectives might look like.
