It was so much fun interviewing Krystalyn Weaver, PharmD, JD (Executive Vice President & CEO, National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations) for our 25th episode of #AstonishingHealthcare! We had a great discussion about several important issues facing #pharmacists and healthcare consumers, including how to solve the "crunching" of the pharmacy business model, #pharmacydeserts, and #pharmacist burnout. We also chatted about all the good pharmacists do, recent positive news/wins in Iowa and Tennessee, and the clear potential to improve patient care and outcomes by working alongside physicians. 🎧 Listen to the entire episode here: https://okt.to/HU7akh

Is this it? I asked myself late at night, buried in medication bottles and spreadsheets. Pharmacists are often hidden away, their vast expertise unrecognized. But we are more than pill counters. We are healthcare's unsung heroes. 👉 We catch prescription errors that could harm patients. 👉 We offer crucial advice on medication management. 👉 We play a vital role in patient care teams. Yet, our contributions often go unnoticed. The healthcare system is broken, partly because pharmacists are undervalued. Imagine a world where pharmacists are recognized as the medication experts they are, integral in healthcare decision-making, with their voices heard and expertise respected. We envision a healthcare system where pharmacists are celebrated, their knowledge fully utilized to create healthier communities. It's time to step out of the backroom and into the spotlight. Because when pharmacists thrive, patients thrive. Ready to join us in this mission? Comment below if you believe in the power of pharmacists!

A new piece of research from Healthwatch England (HWE) has found that in 2023, there were 436 permanent pharmacy closures. This figure means that more than one pharmacy closed permanently every day, or just over eight closed every week. Moreover, HWE also revealed there were 13,863 instances of temporary closure. This equates to 46,823 hours being lost or the equivalent of 5,852 standard pharmacy working days. This all represents hours of lost access to essential support, or even lifesaving prescriptions. To reduce the impact of pharmacy closures on pharmacy users, Healthwatch England recommended: • Cross-system work to ensure patients are better notified of pharmacy closures and that pharmacy teams have enacted improved contingency plans. • A national evaluation to consider issues facing pharmacy, including workforce, funding, data, and estates.
