I was chatting with Jeff Kallay about the "fourth turning" and it's impact on the campus visit. We're still learning about post-COVID culture on campuses, but one thing's for certain: you should always be nailing it on the basics. If you're not already self-auditing your campus visit, you should be. Even little missed moments on tours can make an impression - one that you don't want. But if you need help, we've got you. Learn about this, and Michelle's new campus visit offering, on the Echo Delta website: https://lnkd.in/eaxJEXsH

Higher Ed enrollment, like our society and country, is in a Fourth Turning (read Neil Howe's book); chaos and crisis are changing institutions and structure. But, if your college or university has a priority on providing placed-based, residential and on-campus undergraduate education; then the basics of your campus visit still matter. I interviewed my Echo Delta enrollment consulting colleague Michelle Rhodes about the importance and often overlooked basics for our blog. It is a two minute read that gives advice on guidance on the baseline of all campus visit experiences. 🏛 ⭐ Schools can enhance the educational experience by designing buildings that cater to the unique stages of learning.🚸 🧒 🔡 For younger students, environments should inspire curiosity and independence, with optimal conditions boosting learning progress. Hands-on learning and critical thinking flourish in such settings. As students advance, facilities should support diverse curricular and extracurricular activities, preparing them for exams like the GCSEs. Thoughtful spaces and timetables can give students opportunities to select more options while connecting with nature enhance engagement and foster responsibility. For sixth form students, buildings should facilitate deeper study and community engagement. Andreea Cutiero, an architect who designs spaces to enhance social interactions, recently wrote an article in Arch Daily about the increased importance to develop flexible spaces. Varied dining options and social spaces that can be rearranged to suit multiple purposes help balance academics with personal growth. Such environments reduce distractions and encourage collaboration, boosting performance and development. Akeley Wood School exemplifies these principles with its three beautifully historic buildings set among manicured gardens, each designed to cater to different stages of learner growth while retaining their heritage. Our nursery offers specialized rooms for role-play, forest school exploration, and activities that stimulate creativity and a love for learning. The junior school inspires students with a variety of instruments, cooking classes, a dedicated library, and laptops from year 3 to teach responsible technology use. In the senior school, students have access to a wide breadth of GCSE paths from sport and DT to geography and film, along with extensive extracurricular options. As students progress to sixth form, they delve deeper into their interests with various A-Levels, specialized spaces for creating, studying, socializing, and a café for meals. Akeley Wood provides an environment where every student can thrive and develop their unique talents, ensuring they grow into well-rounded individuals prepared for the future. Our video 'The Door' will walk you through how students are using our many spaces at Akeley Wood School. Thank you to Samantha Chambers, @EmilyParkes, the students and everyone at JonesMillbank Film & Video Film & Video who worked on this gorgeous video. THIS is the experience economy. 'Bama and other flagships are your direct competition these days. Competing against them requires a different approach, price, and outcomes. What does your institution offer that's more valuable than this, from initial impression through to Alum status? Focus on that.

70% of college students are on a campus within 50 miles of home. Higher education in America is both an international/national market, but also a regional/local market. And as demographics shift, how colleges fill their classroom seats and dorm room beds becomes even more important. Two decades ago, U. of Alabama decided to make out-of-staters a strategic priority. Today, at a dozen flagships, fewer than half of the freshmen class is from in-state. Flagships becoming more popular with students who are attracted to their size, fun, and football. Even if they have to come from another state, they see the higher out-of-state price as still less than the sticker price of a private (even if not the case w/merit). A few weeks ago, I visited the U. of Alabama -- where 58% of freshmen are from out of state-- to see how its strategy is working as it gets more competition from other flagships. Much like college football, when there is competition, the arms race spins ever upward. Case in point: the new admissions welcome center at 'Bama, housed in a restored national historic landmark -- a former state mental hospital. My initial reaction: holy sh** Beyond the historical architectural details throughout, there's the welcome center itself, where they greet you with your name in lights. The first part is like a modern museum experience, with a mix of videos and photos (metal prints that can be easily swapped out). Then there is the ROLL TIDE room, an immersive video experience where you think you're actually there on football Saturday. The video screens above you are bent to give you the feeling of a wave rolling over you.

In the competitive higher education landscape, Kendall Jones of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University crafts strategies to allure students with contemporary spaces and continuous campus improvements. FROM THE STORY: Modern post-secondary school students have many options when deciding where to attend college. Sure, some universities with specific programs are rated higher than the average institution, but that many choices mean colleges and universities need to do more to attract new students and maintain or increase enrollment. That gives Kendall Jones many options regarding his role as associate vice president of facilities, planning, construction and safety at Florida A&M University. “Students today are totally different than when my career started many decades ago,” Jones says. “They want more than just a place to live. They want spaces that inspire creativity and social interaction.” FAMU, a historically black university that first opened to students in Tallahassee in 1887—and the only public HBCU in Florida—recently received approval from the Florida Board of Governors to add to its on-campus housing. Jones says the new 700-bed residence hall will help attract new students when it opens in the fall of 2025. https://lnkd.in/ejVMZUTj

Kicking off a week of college visits, I enjoyed seeing the University of Virginia in Charlottesville again, even in the rain! UVA is a beautiful campus in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about an hour from Richmond and 2 hours from Washington DC. There's a major airport in Richmond with direct flights to a lot of US cities, and also an Amtrak station 20 minutes from campus, with buses going there daily. Students apply into 1 of 5 colleges: Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Applied Science, Architecture, Nursing, and Education and Human Development. It's important to note that while it might be possible to switch from one college to another after matriculation, it is often difficult to do so. Two other things worth noting about majors: nursing is direct admit, which is quite unusual among southern public institutions, and architecture does not require a portfolio. First year students are required to live on campus and most students move off-campus after the second year, but housing is available for upperclassmen. Large classes were mentioned several times on my tour and they can be as large as 400 students. I ate lunch in the dining hall and the food left something to be desired. This is all to say that the University of Virginia is very prestigious and an excellent academic institution, but it is a large flagship public university with all that comes with that, regardless of rankings. That said, UVA ranks in the top 5 for public institutions, or best value in public institutions by many 3rd party sources including Princeton Review, Niche, USNWR and Money Magazine. I really appreciated the transparency from admissions when they said that they look for all 5 subject areas for all 4 years of high school in the most challenging courses available. This is something we frequently counsel our students on if they are applying to highly selective colleges, but it's really great to hear it directly from the horse's mouth. They also said they like to see as many AP's as possible. With only 1/3 of each incoming class allotted for out-of-state students, this is great advice if a student wants to be a competitive applicant. #UVA #collegecounseling #collegeplanning
