📢 ANNOUNCING MAY EVENTS! 📢 Whether it’s from memories on the schoolyard, from inequity in the workplace, or the relationships you hold close, you know we have major challenges to overcome if we're going to become a gender-equitable society. So if you’re committed—or if you’re curious—there is a place for you in the Next Gen Men community. We facilitate online and in-person events for people of all genders and backgrounds to unpack how masculinity is evolving, how we can show up as allies and stakeholders, and how we can have healthy relationships with ourselves and others. If you leave with just one idea that stays with you, that’s a win. If you walk away with a feeling of connection, that’s a double-win. If you keep your connections and ideas in motion long after the event wraps up, that’s transformation. Join us this month! Good morning everyone! For those of you that I have not met, my name is Jeremiah Kelly and I serve as the Assistant Director of Campus Involvement at Wingate University. I hope you're having a fantastic week! I am creating this post with the goal of inviting you and your business to Wingate University's annual Street Fair. The event is scheduled to be held August 22nd from 5pm-7pm on the McGee Promenade (central campus), rain or shine unless unbearable weather Set-up that day will begin at 4 pm with table check-in. What is a Street Fair? This is a time on campus where all of our student clubs, campus offices and local community partners come together to table for a few hours to show our new students (and returning students) all of the different things the University and our local community have to offer. So we have clubs advertising interest meetings, we have campus offices showing positions they are hiring for. And then we have our community partners! We have local shopping boutiques coming to share their deals. Restaurants coming to promote their locations. Health care providers coming to share resources. Essentially, if you have something going on that you would like Wingate students to be aware of and participate in, Street Fair is absolutely the place for your organization For everyone who signs up to be a part of the Street Fair, - Wingate will provide one 6 ft table and two folding chairs. Anything else will need to be provided by your organization (tent, table cloth, anything additional). - Traditionally, organizations will bring info pamphlets/business cards, giveaways and things of that nature. We will regularly have more than 1000 people come through the Street Fair. If you are interested in participating in Street Fair, please indicate here! I'd be happy to connect with you and provide the sign up form! #charlottenc #monroenc #unioncounty #meckcounty #hiring #advertising #business

Been thinking about inclusive event structures lately, and am curious - for all my parents of young kids out there - what's the best event structure / day / time that would work for your schedules??? Specifically shorter, local, networking-style events. (Conferences and offsites are a whole other convo). Inspired by Marissa McNeelands's post about how many tech events lean heavily male, and some responses that point towards IRL events being harder for primary caregivers (esp. women) to attend. I'm a BIG believer that the medium is the message (ref - good old Marshall McLuhan's sociological theory) and know this applies to how we structure spaces, too. If events are always (e.g.) happy hours or late night drinks, it can be prohibitive to people who need to pick up kids from school, put kids to bed, etc. (Let alone the alcohol-free peeps, which I tend to fall into). How can we use the actual structure and timing of our events to increase inclusivity and diverse representation? Things I'm mulling over right now... 💭

Central Diversity Officer, University of Amsterdam; Philosopher @ Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, UvA; Co-founder Keti Koti Dialogue Table.
Today is the Dutch ceremonial opening of the academic year with speeches by chairpersons of our universities. Likely topics to figure in these speeches are i) the turbulences that our campuses suffered from due to the war in Israel/Palestine and demands from students and staff for universities to take a stance and/or to boycot Israeli institutions that are directly/indirectly involved in or supporting that war; ii) the announcement by our recent extreme-right coalition government of substantial budget cuts on higher education - amounting to the budget of 1 large university or 2 medium-large universities (of a total of 14 uni's in NL). Our Central Diversity Office has prepared for 2 events in the coming month that address these same issues, as you can read in our newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/e6qwGv4H . On September 25, 16-18 hrs. we are hosting the Jewish/Arab Israeli grassroots peace organization עומדים ביחד نقف معًا Standing Together in an interactive session. We hope to learn from co-directors Rula Daood & Alon-Lee Green about their coalition building and from their internal and external dialogues such that our UvA community can also seek ways to support peace, to bolster the moral and social responsibility of our university also in terms of its collaborations with external parties, while preserving a respectful and peaceful campus for all. On Diversity Day, October 1, 20-22 hrs. we're organizing another interactive panel session in which we're addressing the backlash against DEI that is visible worldwide and in the Netherlands as well - with one governing party proclaiming it aims to end 'diversiteitsgeneuzel' ('diversity posturing'). For many of us it is disconcerning to witness how some 4 years after Black Lives Matter demonstrations stirred a lot of global awareness of how our societies are coping with a historical lack of diversity and inclusion causing unfair distribution of opportunities and risks we are now seeing a negative attitude towards such reflections and actions. With audience members we will together discuss a current 'diagnosis' of and potential responses to this situation while hearing reflections by National Coordinator against Discrimination and Racism Rabin S. Baldewsingh, UvA chairperson Edith Hooge, political scientist Saskia Bonjour and more. Finally, if you're a student or colleague at UvA and still interested in engaging with diversity & inclusion at UvA, than you might join the recently established UvA Diversity SOunding Board: check out this newsletter! As Central Diversity Office, we're wishing all our students and colleagues an inspiring academic year and we're hoping to welcome you soon! Great ideas start with a conversation.
Thrilled to be part of the panel for One for the City's support event "Starting Young: Supporting Opportunities for the Young People of Leeds." I'll be talking about the work Generation UK & Ireland does to transform social mobility in Leeds, and look forward to hearing insights from fellow panelists Oly Newton and Abby Dix-Mason. Thanks to One for the City team for giving space to this hugely important topic and for the opportunity to collaborate. We need to work collectively to create brilliant opportunities for young people in Leeds and to enable fair accessibility and inclusion. If you're interested to find out more about how your business could help with this, do come along to Platform, Leeds Tuesday at 5pm! https://lnkd.in/eQBwkfMJ
