As part of our Heritage Month series, we feature Thembekile Shabalala, CIMA Adv Dip MA, Management Accountant (Trainee) at Hobbs Sinclair, who shares a profound saying from her Tswana heritage: "Ditau di senang seboka di siiwa ke none e tlhotsa" (A divided lion's pride is outrun by a limping antelope) This powerful saying emphasises the importance of unity and working together. It reflects that even the strongest group can fail if divided, while collective effort can overcome the toughest challenges. For Thembekile, it speaks to the communal nature of humanity, where sharing knowledge and resources enriches everyone. It also ties into the concept of ubuntu, reinforcing that when we journey together, we achieve greater things. Culture: Setswana, spoken by the Batswana people in South Africa and Botswana. #HeritageMonth #CulturalWisdom #Unity #Ubuntu #ProudlySouthAfrican

Ramadan Mubarak to the LinkedIn Community! I wanted to reach out to old colleagues, current ones, and those I haven't had the pleasure to work with yet to share personal stories and facts about Ramadan to inform, educate and create a sense of tolerance/understanding for those who might not be familiar with the practice of Ramadan and why it's so sacred. Ramadan has always stirred a sense of anxiety for me every year when it comes to work. I worry about my performance at work and keeping on top of things. As there is no doubt, it's a tough process. 30 days of fasting from sunrise to sunset without food and water is a test of patience and resilience. There's the lack of sleep, tempered with the challenge of your body not getting the cycle of food its used to while managing your life responsibilities at the same pace you're used to. And yet, every year, I come back to doing it with energy and excitement. Despite the challenges, it's also a time of introspection, growth, and deepened faith. There's a sense of togetherness and community that feels so beautiful through the shared experience of fasting with family & friends. There's a huge element of charity that is emphasized during the month. There's reflection on deep, philosophical topics that put life into perspective. And these are the moments that I treasure over the exhuastion and inevitable hanger pangs. So, here's to embracing the challenge and emerging stronger! P.s. I'll be sharing more about Ramadan including hot tips to be mindful of when working with muslim colleagues observing fasts. So, make sure you give me a follow and keep your eyes peeled for more content like this for the next 30 days! P.p.s. Let me know your questions specific to Ramadan you'd like me to cover. #RamadanMubarak #ramadankareem #Resilience #Faith #Patience #Growth

🌙✨ Embrace the Spirit of Ramadan: A Time for Reflection, Connection, and Growth! ✨🌙 As we approach the blessed month of Ramadan, it's not just about fasting from dawn till dusk; it's a time for spiritual rejuvenation, self-reflection, and strengthening bonds with our community. 🌿 What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). 🌟 Why Fast? Fasting isn't just about abstaining from food and drink; it's a holistic experience that encompasses self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and gratitude for life's blessings. Plus, it's an excellent opportunity for a detox from all the distractions. 🤝 Community Connection Ramadan isn't just about personal reflection; it's also about coming together as a community. Whether it's sharing meals with loved ones, breaking fast with friends, or reaching out to those in need, Ramadan fosters a sense of unity and compassion. 💡 Educational Moments During Ramadan, many Muslims engage in extra acts of worship, such as reading the Quran, attending nightly prayers (Taraweeh), and giving to charity (Zakat). It's a time for personal growth and spiritual development. 🎉 Celebrate Diversity Ramadan isn't exclusive to Muslims; it's an opportunity for people of all faiths and backgrounds to learn about and celebrate diversity. Hosting an Iftar meal, learning about Islamic traditions, or simply offering a kind word can bridge cultural gaps and promote understanding. 🚀 Takeaways for Work In the workplace, Ramadan teaches valuable lessons in empathy, time management, and resilience. Employers can support their Muslim colleagues by offering flexible schedules, accommodating religious practices, and fostering an inclusive environment for all. 🌙✨ Let's make this Ramadan a time of growth, connection, and positivity! Wishing everyone a blessed month ahead. ✨🌙 Ramadan Mubarak! #ramadan #ramadanmubarak #ramadankareem #workculture #fasting #reflection #diversity #inclusiveworkplace #muslimcommunity #islamiceducation

Today is the first day of Ramadan for many Muslims. Ramadan is a sacred month in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims around the world observe fasting from dawn until sunset. Beyond abstaining from food and drink, Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline and acts of charity. During this month it’s important to be mindful of our Muslim colleagues who may be observing fasting. Here are a few considerations: 1. Respect for fasting colleagues: consider scheduling meetings earlier in the day rather than late afternoon and be mindful of scheduling meetings or events that involve food during fasting hours and prayer times. 2. Flexibility: understand that fasting may impact productivity and energy levels. Offer flexibility in work hours or tasks, where possible, to accommodate any changes in routine during Ramadan. Support holiday requests, especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan which are particularly significant and allow home working where possible. 3. Cultural sensitivity: take the opportunity to learn more about Ramadan and its customs. Engage in conversations with your Muslim colleagues to understand their experiences and perspectives better, asking is learning! Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙

As the crescent moon heralds the arrival of Ramadan, I extend my warmest greetings to all observing this sacred month. 🌙✨ In a world diverse in cultures, beliefs, and traditions, Ramadan stands as a poignant testament to the universal values of tolerance, coexistence, and peace. It is a time when Muslims around the globe fast from dawn to sunset, not just in a physical sense, but also in a spiritual one—striving to abstain from excess and the heedless pursuit of desires. This Ramadan, let us reflect on how this period of self-discipline and introspection can inspire us all, regardless of our beliefs. It is a call to embrace moderation, to consider our actions, and to consume responsibly. 🍽️♻️ As we enjoy life's delights, let's do so mindfully, savoring them without overindulgence, and always with a thought for the well-being of future generations. Let's also remember that Ramadan is more than just fasting; it's a time for charity, empathy, and reaching out to those in need. It's a season for strengthening bonds with family and friends, and for building bridges across communities. 🤝💞 In the essence of Ramadan, I invite everyone to consider how we can contribute to a world where tolerance paves the path for peace, where coexistence is celebrated, and where there's a place on this planet for all of us to live in harmony. May this Ramadan bring you peace, fulfillment, and a renewed sense of purpose. #Ramadan2024 #Tolerance #Coexistence #Peace #Moderation #Sustainability

Ramadan Mubarak! I want to reflect on the significance of this sacred month and the importance of supporting Muslim colleagues, friends, and communities throughout this time of spiritual devotion and cultural celebration. While this post may come a few days into Ramadan, the sentiment remains just as important to create awareness of the holy month and a way to celebrate diversity and Inclusivity. Ramadan is a time for self-discipline, empathy, and increased devotion to prayer and charitable acts. For those who observe it, it's a deeply personal journey that fosters a sense of community and gratitude. In the workplace, an extension of support to those observing Ramadan is crucial. Here's how we can ensure inclusivity and understanding: 1. Flexibility: Recognize that fasting during Ramadan may impact energy levels and productivity. Offering flexible work hours or adjusting deadlines can greatly support our fasting colleagues in maintaining their religious practices while meeting professional obligations. 2. Inclusivity: Take this opportunity to learn more about Ramadan and its significance. Encourage open conversations about cultural traditions and customs, fostering a sense of understanding and inclusivity among team members. 3. Respect: Be mindful of dietary restrictions and avoid scheduling work events involving food during fasting hours. Respect the privacy of colleagues who may choose to keep their fasting practices private. 4. Support: Extend support and empathy to colleagues who may find it challenging to balance work responsibilities with the rigors of fasting. Small gestures of kindness, such as expressing appreciation for their dedication or offering to lighten their workload, can make a significant difference. Working during Ramadan presents unique challenges, but it's also an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Many individuals find that the heightened spirituality and focus during this month enhance their productivity and creativity. I recognize Ramadan as a time of unity, empathy, and shared humanity. By embracing and supporting your fasting colleagues, we cultivate an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. Though we start this acknowledgment of Ramadan a bit late, the spirit of inclusivity and support remains strong. Wishing all those observing Ramadan a blessed and fulfilling month ahead! 🌙✨ #Ramadan #Diversity #Inclusion #Unity #Empathy #WorkplaceCulture

My 4 daughters have moved to a Brisbane Catholic Education school this year. Being Muslims ourselves, this often leads to amusing conversations at home as we explore the differences and similarities between Catholicism and Islam. Yesterday I asked them if Lent had started knowing that Ramadan is starting next week. “Yes daddy, I gave up Skittles - one of my favourite lollies”, said Liyana before Samarah followed up with “and I gave up school.” Oh dear. I usually make an annual post about Ramadan in the hope that it may be of some value to you if you have Muslim employees or customers. In essence, we cannot eat or drink anything during daylight hours for the month (medical/hardship exemptions apply). Before you feel too sorry for us, many of us gain weight given the feast every night. But Ramadan is a lot more than just giving up food and drink, it’s a reminder to us of God and the importance of striving to be a good person. A bit like remembering your mother if you haven’t visited or called her in a while. We will be literally practicing our self development to be kinder, more patient and empathetic people throughout the month. We may also be absent for breakfast and lunch events and coffee catch ups for the next 4 weeks (sorry!). It’s not because we can’t eat but because we don’t want to make those who can, feel uncomfortable. I tell my friends that the nicest thing they can do for me is carry on eating in front of me as if nothing has changed - I would feel bad imposing my choices on to them, but I get that it can be a hard conversation to have at times. Please do reach out to your colleagues and clients and have a chat about Ramadan. Our bonds are stronger when we connect on things that matter to us, and the world could definitely do with stronger bonds across cultures at the moment. Wishing you all a very happy month of Ramadan. #ramadan #lent #inclusion #workplace
