This design is both ambitious and evocative, integrating classical sculpture with a modern glass building. The large-scale figures pulling the Earth are not only a dramatic entrance feature but also reinforce the EPA's commitment to global environmental stewardship. The green roof adds a layer of sustainability and helps the building blend with the natural environment. The extensive use of glass suggests transparency and openness, values which are significant for a government agency. However, the feasibility of such a large sculpture in relation to the building's structure would require careful engineering. Overall, the design is visionary, with high marks for creativity and symbolism, though practical implementation might present significant challenges.

The visual representation of retrofits, conversions or extensions of existing buildings is one of the most exciting parts of architectural visualisation. Sometimes it can be done by integrating photography with rendering, though in many cases, like the image below, the existing building has to be modelled, textured and rendered along with the new addition. The existing building must look believable and thus special consideration must be given to 'aging' it, baking in dirt and patina, subduing the materials so that they do not look to shiny and brand new. To quote Juhani Pallasmaa: "In the words of Gotthard Booth, ‘nothing gives man fuller satisfaction than participation in processes that supersede the span of individual life’. ✨Call for papers “What Light Through Yonder Window Breaks?”: The Window as Protagonist in British Architecture and Visual Culture Deadline: Monday 8 July 2024 at 12noon Symposium to be held on 21 and 22 November 2024 From the quintessentially romantic “balcony scene” in William Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet" to the visceral tension of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1954 film "Rear Window"; in paintings, prints and photography; in architectural drawings and their realisation in three-dimensional form, the window has played a significant role in almost every medium of artistic expression. The window serves, both literally and figuratively, as a boundary between interior spaces and the external world, between humans and nature, between the familiar and the unknown. As we mark five years this winter since the outbreak of Covid-19, we recognise how recurring lockdowns underscored our own personal consciousness of the boundary between interior and exterior. More than a boundary, however, the window also acts as a frame, helping to define and mediate how we see and interact with the spaces around us, not least providing a view of the world outside from a place of relative protection from the elements – an important consideration following the world’s hottest year on record. Across visual media and architectural design, the window is central to a broad range of issues, including self-representation, privacy and security, surveillance and voyeurism, spiritual and religious symbolism, climate and the environment, and technological and industrial innovation. This conference will explore the multifaceted, multi-purpose nature of the window as protagonist, with an emphasis on its place in British architecture and visual culture, broadly conceived. A range of interdisciplinary papers presented by international scholars will provide a platform for dynamic and engaging discourse that forefronts the cultural and social significance of the window in its many guises as object, as boundary, as frame and as mediator. How much would you pay for transforming the way you live? It’s the recurring hawk (vulture rather) over our architects (and all Consultants) heads. The million pound question, the subject of many disagreements and incomprehensions with clients. Who in turn often add a veil of unnecessary choking pressure over the whole orchestra of consultants.. I often ask potential clients what car would they want to drive when relating to the final outcome of a project. A Ferrari, an Audi or a 1982 fiat panda (mind you, the 4x4 took me once up very steep hills to a marble quarry in Tuscany, it’s a cracking machine..!). They often smile at the comparison, then they go quiet as soon as they understand it.. but you could use a table or a chair as vehicle to convey the comparative scales of costs and decisions one would need to go through. It could take some time to think through and make the table you want. Or you can just buy it at Ikea. Or Mdf Italia (love their tables). Consultants fees cover the time spent in assembling the various piece of a project, but that alone is not enough. A project is a journey of exploration and discovery, of dealing with the emotional vagaries of the ensemble involved. It’s about being able to orchestrate the ups and down of everything which goes into a project, material and immaterial. These types of graphics enhance their quality of experience by making spaces more informative, interesting, memorable, and/or easier to navigate. Environmental design is a broad type of design.
