This principle guided XCASSIA's winning entry competition for a 100,000 sqm mixed-use development on Bahrain’s reclaimed seafront. The design, situated near the Bahrain City Centre Mall and financial hub, began as simple sketches capturing the essence of three interconnected towers. These diagrams evolved into detailed plans for a 288-key hotel, short-term and long-term residential suites, and a public urban plaza. However, in the Middle East, certain elements remain timeless, like the need for patterned openings that shield you from the heat, or - as they’re more glamorously known - Mashrabiyas. 🌞🏛️ For various reasons, from ventilation and privacy to filtering sunlight without heat gain, Mashrabiyas are a hallmark of traditional Islamic and Arab architecture. These perforated windows feature calculated geometric patterns made of turned wood, resulting in a delightful interior that hosts a playful light experience. ✨🏠 Despite their widespread use throughout the region, it took a while before this traditional feature was replicated in contemporary projects.
