Nature is climate’s greatest ally, with the capacity to absorb up to half of our world's carbon emissions every year. As governments gather in Colombia later this year, Holcim is joining Business for Nature and more than 130 businesses and financial institutions with combined revenues of $1.1 trillion to urge Heads of State to put nature at the heart of decision-making. With less than 100 days until the UN Biodiversity #COP16, we call on governments to strengthen policies to drive business action and support the transition to a nature-positive, net-zero economy for all. As one of 17 companies piloting the first science-based targets for nature, at Holcim we are working to protect natural ecosystems across our operations and neighboring communities, while also developing building solutions that bring more nature into our cities. #COP28 is the latest venue where world leaders are acknowledging the critical need to curb #MethaneEmissions. ReFED released a brief last year that describes how addressing #FoodWaste is a powerful strategy to keep this potent greenhouse gas out of our atmosphere. Scaling up existing programs to prevent food from becoming waste, recover surplus food for donation, and recycle materials through compost or anaerobic digestion would slash releases of methane, while also addressing food insecurity and contributing to a circular economy. The latest US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report estimates that 58% of landfill methane emissions come from food waste. #Philanthropy can serve as a driving force, providing the necessary resources and impetus to scale up initiatives and make a more significant impact. Revisit this report to learn more about the catalytic role that philanthropic support plays in reducing methane from food waste, and stay tuned for exciting methane research coming from ReFED in 2024. As the dust settles on #COP28UAE, never before has there been such a clear signal that the carbon-intensive supply chains of industrial forestry and fossil fuels have no place in today’s climate-constrained world.    It’s natural to have mixed emotions about the outcomes and intentions of this year’s climate summit.    But, whilst the final text is loose - and lacking - in rigour, I feel heartened that it not only calls for a historic transition away from fossil fuels, but also recognizes the necessity to halt and reverse #deforestation and forest degradation by 2030.    Keeping #Forests standing remains the fastest, cheapest, and most effective way to stabilize our climate. Forest conservation and restoration is critical to limit warming to 1.5°C.    Regardless of how historic this COP text may or may not be, we’ve shown over the past 27 COP’s that nature will not automatically be conserved nor will supply chains shift away from the destruction of forests and exploitation of fossil fuels. These systemic shifts require significant interventions - strong market demand for low-carbon materials, the accelerated deployment of large-scale financing, robust public policy. All are integral to 1.5°C.    And yet, $7 Trillion in subsidies and investments are still deployed into carbon-intensive sectors that harm nature every year - 30 times the amount spent on nature-based solutions. And the weak mention of phasing out fossil fuel subsidies in COP28’s final text, with no mention of timeline, risks this lopsided equation rising even higher.   To flip this 30:1 ratio and achieve the goals of COP28, we need more clarity on:  1.   How countries will halt and reverse deforestation and forest degradation by 2030 – what policies will they develop to cut market access for high-carbon products and incentivize low-impact alternatives 2.   How we will scale the capital required to move business from intention to action, and scale nature-positive and climate-compatible businesses and supply chains   Fortunately, there are incredible opportunities for investors to move capital to scale low-carbon, low-footprint sustainable alternatives, otherwise known as Next Gen solutions. There’s a strong pipeline of game-changing solutions that are ready to scale. Market demand is strong and growing.   Next Gen solutions are low-impact materials such as agri-residue and textile waste that can be used instead of climate-critical forests in supply chains. Scaled production of Next Gen will alleviate the pressure off vital ecosystems, keep temperatures in check, and sustain conservation economies where communities take the lead in deciding how to manage their land and resources.    Now is the time for accelerated #ClimateInvestment and large-scale #ForestProtection to achieve the #ParisAgreement - and planetary stability.    Join us.    #UniteActDeliver | #ImpactInvestment | #CircularEconomy | #GreenFinance | #NextGenNow  | #SupplyChains  | #NatureBasedSolutions

The world faces converging environmental crises that are inextricably linked and compounding: the accelerating destruction of nature and climate change. Nature, Land Use and Oceans Day at COP28 saw world leaders focused on efforts to protect and restore nature by channeling finance to natural-climate solutions (NCS). https://lnkd.in/gdtCf7Xb - Supply of forest carbon credits: Costa Rica and Ghana agreed to supply forest carbon credits to buyers within the LEAF coalition, a public-private partnership working to end tropical deforestation by leveraging high-integrity carbon markets. The two deals, worth over $60 million, are the first to involve funds from multiple corporate buyers, including Bayer and McKinsey & Company, alongside the public sector. The credits are backed by the governments of Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States. - Scaling high-integrity credits: The World Bank launched a road map for scaling high-integrity forest carbon credits in 15 countries, worth up to $2.5 billion. - Framework for carbon markets: Ensuring the integrity of overall voluntary carbon markets has been agreed, encompassing both demand-side (SBTi, VCMI) and supply-side (ICVCM) standards. - Government commitments from Norway and Indonesia; the European Commission and Honduras, the United Kingdom; and Ghana can be found at our daily Pulse blog at https://lnkd.in/gY6_qb_G - Nature and conservation: The Nature Finance Hub was launched by the Asian Development Bank; Act30 was launched to partner with Indigenous Peoples; and The Dubai Ocean Declaration called on world leaders to expand ocean observation worldwide. Read about pollution, climate change, overfishing, and other topics related to the marine environment. You can also watch documentaries and attend events related to marine sustainability. 2. Reduce plastic use: Plastic pollution is a major problem in the oceans. You can take the first step to reduce your plastic use by carrying a reusable water bottle, using reusable shopping bags, and saying no to plastic straws and cutlery. 3. Support sustainable seafood: Overfishing is a problem that puts many marine species at risk. Supporting sustainable seafood means buying from fisheries that use environmentally friendly fishing methods, respecting fishing quotas, and respecting closed seasons. 4. Join a local organization: There are several non-profit organizations working toward marine sustainability. You can join one of these organizations and support their work by volunteering, making donations, or promoting their campaigns on social media. 5. Advocate for marine sustainability: Use your voice to raise awareness about marine sustainability issues, in conversations, on social media or by signing online petitions to encourage environmental action. Together we can work towards marine sustainability and protect our oceans for future generations.
