Is the frontline of national defense now at our desks? In what other job are normal citizens actively fighting a person on the other side that is wearing a military uniform? Today, cybersecurity professionals are on the front lines of a high-stakes digital battlefield, directly engaging with adversaries—including those in military uniforms. This isn't just another job; it's a crucial national defense position, combating organized, state-sponsored military groups. This dynamic field demands continual learning and adaptation due to the rapid evolution of threats. It’s a challenging, ever-changing environment that merges the rigor of intellectual engagement with the adrenaline of securing national interests. #Cybersecurity #NationalSecurity #BlueCollarTech #DigitalDefense #TechCareers #CyberWarfare #FutureOfWork #CyberTraining #InfoSec #EmergingTech

Cybersecurity is a vital part of national security, and should be treated as such. Cybersecurity transcends traditional national defense sectors to include healthcare, retail, hospitality, local utilities, local government, and other sectors not historically considered part of the national security ecosystem.

I totally agree with this. I am curious to what non-security folks’ point of view is on the topic. I really enjoy when my friends who aren’t involved in cyber ask questions about security topics they’re seeing in the news.

I personally think the idea of a frontline can be dropped in this aspect. Can you call it the front line if the adversary has made it to your doorstep (A cyber security expert fighting a network intrusion)? We could definitely say the cyber domain is the most sustained and dynamic realm of conflict in the present day. I think it is important to do so in a manner that accurately portrays the reality of cybersecurity without leaning on catchy lingo. Frontline is a term that doesn’t really convey the threat in an arena where cyber infrastructure can be simultaneously attacked across multiple continents in a matter of seconds. Cybersecurity must exist everywhere, all the time.

Looking at this issue from outside the cybersecurity industry, and having written a paper on this while pursuing my Master's, I think that security as a whole is part of the national defense. Unfortunately, I can also come up with many possibilities as to why the leaders in this country have not come out and said that we are currently in the middle of at least one cyber conflict.
