The Power of Apprehension: What Stops Us from Taking That First Step? Have you ever hesitated to visit a new place? Maybe you’ve felt a twinge of unease before entering an unfamiliar venue, unsure of what to expect. Now, imagine that feeling magnified—so powerfully that it stops you from going somewhere you need or would like to be. A job interview, a sports venue, a flight, a college, a museum or, a health centre. Let’s consider this: How might a sense of apprehension about an unfamiliar environment lead someone to avoid a potentially life-saving appointment? Could this fear, which so many of us experience in small doses, become a barrier to something as critical as a routine preventative cancer screening appointment? For millions of people in the world, this anxiety isn't just mild discomfort; it becomes a wall. A wall so high that it can prevent them from seeking care that could save their lives. How would it feel to know that something as simple as a new location, unfamiliar surroundings, or concerns about accessibility could keep you from making a decision that might determine your future health? Many individuals face this reality every day. They want to go. They need to go. But they don’t. The consequences can range from missed life-affirming enjoyment and opportunities which most people take for granted, to avoidable life-shortening outcomes. So, how can we break down these barriers? What reasonable adjustments can be made so that everyone, regardless of their anxieties or hidden conditions, can confidently step into the places they need to visit—whether for a routine check-up, a preventive screening, or just an important meeting? Understanding the power of apprehension is the first step. The next is making sure no one is held back by it. Chris Wood Ocean3D.co.uk #EmpathyInAction #AccessibilityMatters #BreakingBarriers

Did you know that chronic pain affects around 28 million people in the UK? That's 43% of the population struggling with pain that lasts for more than 3 months. This isn't just a personal health issue - it's a significant public health concern that impacts our healthcare system, economy and wider society. The economic burden is staggering, with an estimated 4.6 million GP appointments annually linked to chronic pain costing the NHS about £69 million each year, not to mention the broader impact on productivity and quality of life. Addressing chronic pain effectively requires GPs to better understand the condition which is why we've developed an interactive 360 VR training module to do just this. This innovative approach helps doctors experience and empathise with the patient’s perspective, leading to more effective and personalised treatment strategies. Join us at our launch event on Thursday 12 September in Bury St Edmunds to try it for yourself. Karel's DIGest #30/2023 - CUREosity GmbH - VR 🌐 Hello, dear readers! Let me introduce you to CUREosity GmbH, an award-winning medtech company based in Düsseldorf, Germany. They're pioneering Virtual Reality therapy through gamification. 🎮 VR's application in healthcare is one of my greatest passions. Our Hospital Innovation Unit at VAMED MEDITERRA a.s. strives to test all available solutions in the market. Thanks to my colleague Martin Simunek, M.D.'s diligent scouting, we seized the opportunity to try a solution from CUREosity GmbH during MEDICA - Leading International Trade Fair in November, right in their hometown. 🏥 I've encountered several VR solutions, but CUREosity GmbH's stands out for its high-quality graphic environment and especially the precision of movement. Truly stunning! ✨ One unforgettable experience was steering a kite through clouds, controlling it with two ropes – it worked seamlessly! It instantly transported me back to my childhood. The sense of nostalgia and joy was overwhelming; I didn't want to stop. A huge thanks to Jannik Schmitz for this incredible opportunity. 🪁 Now, let's explore the indications of CUREosity GmbH's solution: - Stroke (ischaemic or haemorrhagic) with residual hemiplegia/paresis - (Infantile) cerebral palsy - Spinal cord injuries - Craniocerebral trauma - Musculoskeletal diseases - Neuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome, PNP) - Neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, ALS) - Ataxia of upper limbs and trunk What are Therapy Goals of CUREosity GmbH?
