Intersectionality is an analysis of systems of power and domination. It helps to explain how legal and other life-shaping arrangements lift up some populations and hold down others, including Black and Minoritised Ethnic people. Intersectionality is a reminder that organised racism, misogyny, class interests, ableism, homophobia and so on are interconnected – though not the same. And getting inside the concept can help to ensure more powerful and nuanced endeavours for anti-racism and race equity. Mobilising intersectionality for practical anti-racism and broader equitable outcomes has proved challenging. To move forward, it is important to foreground oppressive systems. Race Equity Series: inside intersectionality The next session of our Race Equity Series, part of the Home Truths 2 programme, will take place on 24 September. In this session, we dive into and demystify the issue of intersectionality – where overlapping identities, such as race, gender and class, combine to affect people’s experiences of disadvantage and privilege. The event will ask some crucial questions, such as what intersectionality means in practice for anti-racist and race equity efforts and how we can have an intersectional analysis of life and, at the same time, focus on racism head-on. Book now and share with your staff: the series is open to all in civil society. https://lnkd.in/e5V84pW4

The talking stick Breaking Down and Rebuilding Racial Constructs Race is not real—it’s a social construct. But what makes it so powerful is the way it has been weaponized to divide us, oppress communities of color, and maintain systems of inequality. For Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, this construct has dictated their lives and opportunities for centuries. It’s time we flipped the script. What if we turned racial constructs into tools for empowerment? By reclaiming our narratives and rejecting harmful stereotypes, we can build systems rooted in equality, dignity, and respect for all. Drawing on insights from scholars like Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Vine Deloria Jr., I propose a new vision: one where racial identity is celebrated as a source of strength and unity. Let’s start using positive language to describe our communities, uplift each other, and educate future generations to see past the lies of white superiority. Together, we can reimagine race as a bridge instead of a barrier. The question isn’t just how we dismantle the system—it’s how we rebuild it. Are you ready to join the conversation? Let’s discuss in the comments! #RacialEquality #SocialConstructs #DiversityAndInclusion #Unity #Empowerment #Decolonize #BlackLivesMatter #ChicanoMovement #IndigenousRights #DrBryanKHickman

Today is #Juneteenth, a significant date in American history. On June 19th each year, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. In 2021, President Joe Biden officially made Juneteenth a federal holiday. Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance, but a call to action. It's a time to reflect on the progress we’ve made and recognize the work still needed to achieve true #equality. At RWE, we are committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and equity. In today’s landscape, speaking up against racism is essential. That’s why we had a keynote event with Ellen Wagner, a leading Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (#DEI) speaker and author. The session was about how to be an active ally in fighting racism, from identifying racism, taking actionable steps as an ally, and cultivating inclusive spaces where everyone feels heard. By promoting #diversity and inclusion within our industry, we can ensure that the benefits of a sustainable future are shared by all. Let's continue to work together to build a more equitable world, both in our communities and beyond.

Dr. Carlos Hoyt is brilliant for those of us committed to advancing racial equality. His work has helped make the complexities and language around race and racism simple. Also helped to make sense of doing this work while holding a non-racial worldview, or being proud of your Race when you hate being constantly racialised. Now, in my training, I use what I call the 3R’s framework to analyse or teach how racist outcomes and behaviours are reproduced. 3R is a tool that helps contextualise the nature of the racial problem and the antiracism work that needs doing. 1. Race - Categorising people with similar skin colour and phenotype into racial groups. 2. Racism – Social construction and institutionalisation of racial categories into political and socioeconomic hierarchies. 3. Racial Socialisation and Behaviours – Process through which individuals or actors acquire and exhibit racial biases or behaviours. To put it simply, think of it as: Race (theory/ideology) + Racism (institutional systems) = the "individual" racist (person or actor). In shorthand: R1 + R2 = R3. How is this understanding useful? The first two elements, Race and Racism, are phenomena that we can critically examine and interrogate from an objective standpoint. It also helps us to see that policing or sanctioning racist behaviour (R3) is not the same as dismantling racism. It’s like removing a branch off a tree without digging up the roots. In other words, “REAL” anti-racism doesn’t happen on the individual level, it is at R1 + R2. Anti-racism is the much deeper introspection on how we utilise Race to create privilege or advantage, and on the Race idea altogether. #race #racism #racialjustice #systemicracism #culture #racismintheworkplace #antiracist

🌟 **Celebrating Juneteenth at Cambridge Resources Incorporated!** 🌟 Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history. At Cambridge Resources Incorporated, we commemorate this important milestone in the ongoing journey towards equality and justice for all. Juneteenth marks the emancipation of the last enslaved Americans in the United States. It serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, courage, and determination of those who fought for freedom and equality. As we reflect on this day, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We recognize that our differences make us stronger, and we are dedicated to creating an environment where every voice is heard and every individual is respected. Let us use this day to educate ourselves, to celebrate the achievements of Previously Enslaved Americans, and to continue our efforts towards building a more just and equitable society. Together, we can make a meaningful impact, not just today, but every day. Happy Juneteenth from all of us at Cambridge Resources Incorporated! 🎉🌍 #Juneteenth #Equality #DiversityandInclusion #CambridgeResources #Celebration #SocialJustice #InclusionMatters #Emancipation
