Before Youth Month comes to an end, I needed to share the leadership lessons shown by my son's Under 13 cricket team from a recent winter tournament: Empathy and Resilience: There is something about sport that I have valued for a long time. It isn't necessarily about the winning (although my husband might often disagree), but about the reality of failing, and having bad days; going out for a golden duck, running a team mate out, or bowling far too many extras in an innings. With each moment they show the resilience to get back up, even when it hurts and continue to try their most, and the understanding from each team member about when to let someone have their moment to deal with the hardship, and when to support and uplift them. Inspiration and Encouragement: There may be one captain in a team, but every member of the team has the ability and opportunity to inspire and encourage, to energise all the players on the field through exhaustion and wanting to give up, and cheer them on to keep fighting for their best. Vision and Decisiveness: Even when it may not go according to plan, these young men show a depth of consideration and planning that many leaders could take some learning from. Accountability and Adaptability: That is sometimes heart breaking as a parent to watch, but also beautiful, as they work together, learning and evolving in the part they play and the impact they have as part of the team. Some days their roles shift, and they need to be ready to add value in different ways. Perseverance: Even after the toughest loss, these young men picked themselves back up, went into the next match with energy and passion. They may not have won the tournament, but they proved themselves worthy future leaders. #leadership #executivesearch #sportmum #careermum
