Domestic abuse is complex; it’s not just signs of physical abuse to look out for but coercive control, financial abuse and/or sexual abuse. The impact on families and children can be devastating. Organisations working in Southend have a plethora of knowledge (and processes) about domestic abuse, and others may just have a basic awareness. Therefore, by watching this video, we hope it reinforces key messages and information about DA and shares knowledge and understanding of how to spot the signs of DA, know how to respond to disclosures and where to go to get help. Such a simple 1 minute video that so clearly expresses the insideous, multifaceted nature of coercive control. Thank you Safe Ireland Many people would say there are multiple acts of family violence in this video, jealously, coercive control, possession, phone monitoring, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, isolation, child abuse through witnessing family violence, and more. I say they are all acts of coercive control in the context of family violence, that are perpetrated in a variety of ways. Within every coercive control action there a calculated method of control to strip freedom. That means that for any predominant aggressor that is able to make cognitively conscious decisions, that regardless of the action, there is always coercive control. When we recognise coercive control as present in every action, our response is more relevant, because we understand the calculated pattern based nature of the violence. That immediately makes it a predominant aggressor issue and not a primary victim issue. Where we position our family members experiencing family violence is critical to ensuring appropriate response.
'Woman and Child' is a short film created by Director Marion Bergin which depicts the shrinking world of a woman and child living with coercive control and domestic violence.
