Homeless Services Network of Central Florida’s Post

According to recent estimates, the number of homeless people in Houston was approximately 3,300 in 2023, with a significant percentage from the Black community. Despite this figure seeming small, it becomes alarming when considering the number of people accessing homeless services in 2021, which exceeded 21,000 in Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties. Notably, the rates of first-time homelessness are increasing, reflecting a profound socio-economic issue. Organizations such as Bread of Life, Inc., Coalition for the Homeless, A Caring Safe Place, and Hearts of Rescue, are making significant strides in addressing homelessness, providing assistance, and creating opportunities. The initiatives range from serving meals, aiding in healthcare access, providing housing, and running a transitional living facility, among other services. Yet, the gravity of this issue begs the question - are we doing enough to prevent homelessness? In the wealthiest country in the world, it’s an outrage that so many people go hungry and without stable, safe housing. Nobody should have to choose which of their basic necessities to forgo, but that is the reality for so many of us. As a society, we have more than enough resources to ensure everybody has their basic needs met. Yesterday the 100 in 100 initiative was launched in Grand Rapids. “An effort to house 100 individuals who are experiencing homelessness in 100 days with an intentional focus on chronic homelessness.” So encouraging to see this private/public partnership. Homelessness is a community-wide problem, and the entire community needs to be part of the solution. This week we're counting down the top 5 steps for Victoria to make the leap to a society that has ended homelessness. The best (and most cost-effective) way to end homelessness is to stop it from happening in the first place. And one of the key ways to do that is to prevent unnecessary evictions.  In Victoria, the Private Rental Assistance Program, the Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program, and TenancyPlus are saving thousands of people from homelessness right now. But demands on these programs far exceed their funding. We need to increase funding to these programs to ensure they work as effectively as possible, saving Victorians from the trauma of homelessness and taking strain off the rest of the homelessness system. Adequate income support from the federal Government also has a vital role to play in ensuring households can meet their basic costs. What's been your experience with eviction-prevention programs? In Charlotte, we're witnessing a critical challenge that touches the heart of our community — the rising tide of homelessness. This year, we're turning our focus toward understanding and addressing the complexities of housing instability in our city. Insights from the 2023 State of Housing Instability & Homelessness report by Mecklenburg County Community Support Services have been eye-opening: ⬆️ The count of individuals facing homelessness in our community is on the rise. ⬆️ An increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness without shelter. ⬆️ People are spending more time in emergency shelters than before. The availability of affordable rental options is dwindling. ⬆️ An increasing number of low- and moderate-income families are finding it hard to secure and maintain housing. ⬆️ The rate of evictions is climbing. The number of homeless people in Connecticut is on the rise, and a growing number are seniors. According to a recent report by the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness, there were 3,015 people experiencing homelessness in the state in January 2023, up from 2,930 in January 2022. Of those, 300 were seniors 65 and older. The rise in homelessness among older people is a complex problem, but it is one that can be solved with the right support and resources. At Renewal House, we provide services that help residents to rebuild their lives one step at a time. Annual Homeless Count to be conducted January 22-29 in Cherokee, Pickens, Forsyth, and Dawson Counties CANTON, GA (Jan. 16, 2024) – Homelessness in the United States soared by 12% to more than 650,000 people during a single-night count at the start of 2023, reflecting a surge in first-time homelessness. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development stated in a new assessment of the homeless population provided to Congress that on a single night in January 2023, roughly 653,100 people -- or about 20 of every 10,000 people in the United States -- were experiencing homelessness. The annual nationwide Homeless Point in Time (PIT) count, which identifies both sheltered and unsheltered homeless across the country including Cherokee and neighboring Pickens, Forsyth, and Dawson counties, is being planned for the week of January 22nd to January 29th, according to Jim Lindenmayer, Director of the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program.
