I had the unique opportunity to talk in front of veterans (who turned entrepreneurs) about innovation and how to achieve product market fit. In my presentation I addressed the role of Design Thinking as a mindset when building human-centric products. The need to talk to your customers, understand their tactical and emotional needs, leverage these insights to develop prototypes, and the requirement to test and iterate these prototypes with your users - fast and cheap. Resilience, adaptability, and a relentless drive to succeed – traits that define both military spouses and entrepreneurs. Both are accustomed to navigating uncertainty, managing multiple roles, and thinking on their feet. Military spouses often have to handle family affairs single-handedly while their partners are deployed, much like entrepreneurs who juggle various aspects of their business. Both groups possess a unique ability to build networks and communities. They understand the importance of support systems and are adept at leveraging their connections to advance their goals. Additionally, military spouses and entrepreneurs are both masters of resourcefulness. They make the most of what they have, often working with limited resources but still achieving remarkable results. Brands like Microsoft and Amazon have launched accelerator programs to help launch and fund start-up endeavors led by women. The Department of Defense is also getting in on the action of supporting military spouses through training programs and mentorship, such as the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program. My transition out of the Army did not start as planned. It's a challenge adjusting to the slower pace of civilian life when you leave the military. Colleagues have their own agendas. And you're rarely at the top of their priority list. It's painful not being able to move your task along because you rely on others. It felt like a step change for me. Because things get done in the military. At a good pace. Because they have to.
