Physician, Scientist, Medical Educator, and Entrepreneur (LightLab Imaging) with more than 25 years at Harvard and MIT.
HISTORY TAKING, ALONG WITH PHYSICAL EXAM SKILLS, ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS OF A PHYSICIAN. THIS DOES NOT MEAN TAKING LONG HISTORIES (WHICH IS NOT POSSIBLE NOW), BUT IT IS LARGELY ACTIVE EMPATHETIC LISTENING. The loss of senior mentoring in medical training has hurt patient care. I am grateful to all my mentors. When I did my fellowship at MGH, they felt we were relying too much on technology making mistakes. They increased the number of attending from countries that were technology limited with excellent H&P skills. Medical schools are letting, in some instances, fourth year medical students (who don’t know yet how to take a good history) to teach first years, getting sucked into the belief that technology has replaced the H&P. There is a LinkedIn Learning course (Active Listening) describing the difference between surface listening and active, empathetic listening (proactive). The need to appreciate the words patients are using and what they didn’t say. You need to eliminate your confirmation biases, filtering the data the patient is saying. I have taught history taking for 25 years. Students and residents learn when they go in a room with a senior attending what they didn’t ask or what they didn’t hear. H&Ps need to become a priority in medical schools again, not MRI reading (there are radiologists for that). #history #listening #physicals #medicaleducation #medicalschools

Missed out? Researchers of the Practicum Foundation, the Imperial College London and the University of Maastricht have published a paper on the solid theoretical grounding of Practicum Script. The paper, available in Medical Education, remarks as revolutionary features of our clinical reasoning simulator its solid foundation in the dual-process theory, the feedback for medical students combining experts’ opinions and evidence-based medicine, and the reinforcement of the individual self- training with clinical debriefings, using Practicum Mentoring. #MedicalEducation #PracticumScript Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME)

"For a medical student with nascent research skills and a full-time core curriculum, a goal of 25 publications and presentations in the 3 years between matriculation and residency application is clearly untenable -- and frankly impossible." [quoted from the article] This is an insightful read. I've been saying it for years. This is happening not just in the US but across the globe -- including Low Middle Income Countries where young doctors-to-be are hell bent on propping their CVs with numbers/quantity (of research papers) without paying much heed to the quality of the work nor on developing a theme to it. It adds to questionable data "polluting" medical literature (as the article mentions). #MedicalResearch #MedicalSchoolResearch #MedicalStudentResearch #GIGO #QuantityOverQuality

Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at Ross University School of Medicine | Strategic Planning | Academic Program, Curriculum & Partnership Development
In response to the need to address and train medical school educators with regards to students’ academic integrity, Kelsey Bowen, our Manager of Student Support at Ross University School of Medicine, spearheaded the development of an educational small group discussion session at AMEE, The International Association for Health Professional Education Conference earlier this year, in a session entitled: “Addressing Academic Integrity: An Educational Approach to Address Complicity in Medical Education Integrity Breaches", increasing students’ personal responsibility to stop and/or report academic integrity concerns they witness. The purpose of the session was the debrief the incident, identify their level of responsibility, and create a plan to ensure future success. “The increased use of hybrid and remote based learning activities has changed the dynamics of how we must ensure academic integrity amongst all students”, cited Ms. Bowen. This environment allowed Ross University School of Medline to pilot an innovative method of addressing student professionalism and accountability in the face of academic integrity complicity, which we were able to highlight at AMEE. Qualitative data showed students grew in their personal responsibility and response to academic integrity concerns. Here is one of many similar student reflections: If you see something, say something. Just because one was not involved, does not mean they are not responsible since it can possibly affect you as a university and future residency.” At Ross University School of Medicine, we are excited to use this model to address other areas for growth in our students, with the goal of guiding our students’ development into competent, ethical medical professionals. Just another stellar example of strong academics at Ross University School of Medicine! #rossmed.

Strategies for applying to medical schools in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom Part 2: Choice of Subjects In the previous discussion, we highlighted how academic performance is crucial in the application process for medical schools in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. While Chemistry is necessary for all medical schools, students who plan to study medicine often choose Biology, Maths or Physics in high school. These subjects will not only enhance your knowledge but also increase your chances of success in the challenging field of medicine. Thus, it's worth considering studying these subjects and gaining a competitive advantage in your university application. Please bear in mind that while certain subject combinations are frequently pursued by those wishing to enter the medical field, it is not mandatory to study those particular subjects. I've seen students who have only studied Chemistry and other humanities subjects successfully gain admission to medical schools. Therefore, I advise students to choose the subjects they feel most confident in. Don't feel pressured to take on a specific subject just because it's the norm. In conclusion, selecting subjects is a personal decision, and students should choose wisely. While getting good grades is crucial, confidence in one's chosen subjects will set them apart from others. I hope this makes sense to you.
