Hello LinkedIn Community, I would like to open discussion for a matter, In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the number of publications medical students have, often overshadowing the quality and impact of their research. This trend is concerning as it encourages the publication of low-impact, poorly designed studies, which ultimately harms the field. It’s perplexing to see newly graduated students with more publications than seasoned professors, highlighting a systemic issue. While research is undeniably important, it should not be the primary focus for students. The acquisition of skills and knowledge should take precedence. I’ve encountered students who sacrifice their education to dedicate more time to research, which is counterproductive. Research should be a complementary aspect of medical education, not the main focus. Every medical student and physician should have a foundational understanding of research to appreciate how science works and to navigate it effectively. Research experience enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but the extent of this experience should align with individual interests and career goals. I believe that a balanced approach, where research complements rather than overshadows education, is essential. I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter

Missed out? Researchers of the Practicum Foundation, the Imperial College London and the University of Maastricht have published a paper on the solid theoretical grounding of Practicum Script. The paper, available in Medical Education, remarks as revolutionary features of our clinical reasoning simulator its solid foundation in the dual-process theory, the feedback for medical students combining experts’ opinions and evidence-based medicine, and the reinforcement of the individual self- training with clinical debriefings, using Practicum Mentoring. #MedicalEducation #PracticumScript Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME)

It's good to see that a medical education article found a place in the most read list of a prominent medical journal. It's difficult for us to come to the fore among all shiny clinical articles. Explore our study titled "#ChatGPT prompts for generating multiple-choice questions in medical education and evidence on their validity: a literature review" published in Postgraduate Medical Journal: https://lnkd.in/e-5jy8ma

Crossword puzzles can be an effective tool in medical education. They can help students become familiar with medical terminology, concepts, and clinical cases in an interactive and enjoyable way. Additionally, they can promote critical thinking and problem-solving by requiring students and residents to apply their knowledge to complete the crossword puzzles. This can help improve retention of material and strengthen independent study skills. Furthermore, crossword puzzles can be used by teachers as an assessment tool to measure students' knowledge in a different format from the traditional one. In summary, crossword puzzles are a creative and effective option to complement medical education.

👨🏽⚕️ Professor of Psychiatry & Medical Psychology, National University of Asunción 🔎 Researcher, National Council of Science and Technology 🏆 SciVal CICCO Award ⭐ Sufficit tibi gratia mea
See the comments for the Spanish translation. Our new book, "The Mental Health of Medical Students: Supporting Wellbeing in Medical Education," released under the imprint of Oxford University Press, addresses the growing concern about stress and burnout among medical students worldwide. In light of the changing healthcare landscape, including the impact of COVID-19 and technological advancements, this book emphasizes the need for flexible and resilient physicians. This volume presents global research findings on burnout rates, proposes a model of care for trainee well-being, and offers case studies from various countries. It includes reflections from the medical students themselves, covering diverse circumstances, and suggesting interventions. Aimed at medical educators, practitioners, and researchers, this book underscores the significance of prioritizing mental health in medical education. The chapter focusing on Paraguay highlights that medical students face mental health challenges due to factors such as an ingrained culture of overworking and neglecting a balanced lifestyle. These issues have been documented in several studies on the mental health of medical students in Paraguay. While initiatives such as the Mental Health Department at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, School of Medical Sciences, provide support, systemic efforts at the structural level are essential for primary prevention and substantial improvement in the mental health of medical students.
