Our FY 23/24 Impact Report is about to be released and reports a 56% increase in demand for our services. Yes, you read correctly - 56%! Poverty in Melbourne is a real issue, and we can't keep ignoring it - but what are we doing about it? What's the government doing about it? All I hear are a LOT of words but very little action...it's hard not to let it get you down. Ben sums it up well in this article - https://lnkd.in/g3Kegrrt
This is Ben Vasiliou our CEO, back when he was growing up in public housing in Hastings with his mum and sisters. A sad reality is poverty means the odds are against you right from the get-go, making it extremely hard to pull yourself out of this position. But with the right support and people around you, just like Ben had, you can break the cycle of disadvantage. 💙 As we come together for Anti-Poverty Week to raise awareness, let's also challenge the stigma surrounding poverty and commit to creating a society where everyone has the chance to thrive. Remember: 🔑 Poverty is not a choice. ⏳ Prevention and early intervention are crucial. 🤔 How do we support those living in poverty to break the cycle? Well, that's to come ... Together, we can break the cycle of poverty. 💫 Learn more ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gWS6uJxv

A £55 million fund has been announced to combat rising child poverty in the North East, a region facing some of the highest rates of deprivation in the UK. The initiative, led by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, aims to address economic disparities and provide crucial support to children and families. The fund forms part of the government’s broader levelling-up agenda, targeting areas with deeply entrenched economic challenges. Recent figures reveal that over 35% of children in parts of the North East are living in poverty, significantly higher than the national average. The percentage of World poverty is approximately 43%. That means that, if the remainder each help just one person, they are going a long way to doing good. Sure, you won’t fix the world’s problems, but you are taking part. If you help two, you are assisting those who are too close to the poverty line to be able to make a difference. If you help a whole family, wow, that’s even better, because in that way you are helping children and as a consequence, grandchildren. How you help is another discussion.

Poverty is a fire that needs to be put out, because if you do not contain a fire, it spreads. You are poor. That is not a sin. But it is a challenge. Maybe even a problem. But, when you decide to marry without first addressing that poverty challenge, it will become an emergency. If you now have children without still tackling your poverty, it will graduate to a crisis. And running from church to synagogue will not help you. God offers you salvation. He does not offer you money. That is why God created work. Both hard work and smart work. So you can engage in it and have money. Prevent future financial crisis in your life. Cure your poverty before you address your desire for a woman.

At CUPS, we see the impact of poverty on the lives of individuals and families every day. Poverty doesn’t just affect access to basic needs like food, shelter, and healthcare—it can also create cycles of trauma, stress, and marginalization that are hard to break without support. Addressing poverty requires a collective, community response. It’s about more than providing services—it’s about creating systems of support that address the root causes of poverty, from housing instability to mental health challenges. At CUPS, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, and we are committed to offering low-barrier, trauma-informed care to help individuals and families break free from the cycle of poverty. But we can’t do this work alone. Combating poverty takes all of us—community organizations, governments, businesses, and individuals—coming together to create lasting change.

In New Orleans, 1 in 3 children live in poverty, over twice the national average. Poverty impacts more than income—it can cause chronic stress that alters brain development, affecting memory, self-regulation, and school readiness. Challenges like food insecurity, frequent moves, and exposure to violence contribute to this stress, underscoring the need for community support. Have you registered yet? 1 Week to go till our In Conversation with Professor Sharon Bessell Event Date: Friday, November 22, 2024 Time: 6pm – 8pm Location: Lawson’s Flat, 4 Sherwood Court, Perth Spend an evening with Professor Sharon Bessell to discuss her groundbreaking work amplifying the voices of children living in poverty. Through her research, Professor Bessell is developing essential indicators to measure child poverty, helping us prevent more children from facing the scarring effects of poverty. Australian children don't just need housing. They need a home. - ANU Policy Brief ➡ ANU researchers have spoken with 132 children about their experiences of poverty. Many said they have a house but not a place they would call a home. ➡ When children were asked what makes a home, children talked about having some outdoors space to play, and indoor space that protects them from cold, heat, and mould. Emergency housing, and in many cases affordable market housing, was not doing this. ➡ Policies that can reduce children’s experiences of poverty without any change in parental income include: addressing conditions in emergency housing, ensuring housing is built at a high quality, (not just in high quantities), and providing child-inclusive outdoor spaces.
