Do you work more than 1 job? If so, what does each one bring you? The start of a new year is a really good time to review this... I currently work 4 (in no particular order): ↪Volunteer counsellor for a baby loss charity ↪Maths tutor (1 A level student and 2 GCSE students per week) ↪Part time PGCE associate tutor (AT) for trainee teachers at Edge Hill uni (still in the pipeline but accepted the role this week! - 3 hours paid per week) ↪1:1 coach (currently with 5 regular clients and another signed yesterday) They all bring different things to the table regarding my values and what makes me tick. Here are my initial thoughts about mine... ↪Counselling - serving others, helping them learn how to think and live with less loss, anger, sadness and regret ↪Tutoring - regular term time income and intellectual stimulation ↪PGCE AT - as above but using my knowledge of computing and teaching ↪Coaching - my passion for personal and professional growth in adults both in me and my clients What I notice is than in all other than the AT role I am more or less autonomous in the way I run all of these... I wonder what that says about me?! Over to you... what do your roles bring you? #womensupportingwomen #squigglycareer #careeradvancement #careercoachingforwomen

My uncle wasn't completely wrong when he told me how unfortunate it was that I'd never fulfilled my potential. That was during a family gathering at least five years ago now, and it had me second-guessing all those decisions I'd made in life. Like the time I'd switched majors during my freshman year or when I threw out those law school applications in lieu of a teaching credential and the keys to a sixth grade classroom. Or, the moment I saw the news on Sept 11th and decided to answer the calling. That was just the first half of my life and the list goes on... My uncle wasn't entirely wrong because I'm about to try my hand at being forty-eight years old in a few days, and I still haven't reached my fullest potential. I'm still hammering away and building new pathways. I'm still studying and learning and discovering how to understand this world, and how to create change. Not just for the sake of change, but so that my two daughters grow up in a world that is truly theirs to thrive in, with opportunities I've never been given and perhaps possibilities I haven't yet dreamt of. I think about my potential every day and I've succumbed to the fact that I'll never reach my fullest potential. But that's because my potential, just like yours, is boundless and limitless. The idea of waking up one day and saying to myself that I've achieved everything I can in this life means little to me. I'm not sure it makes sense anymore. On the other hand, the idea of continuing to dream big dreams and to do good deeds on a daily basis, well that's more meaningful than ever before. There is always the opportunity to create a better tomorrow. And, I don't think that'll ever change. Guess my uncle was right after all. I still have yet to reach my fullest potential. - BTR TMRW Skills Academy #potential #leadership #personaldevelopment #physicalfitness #specialneeds #communitydevelopment #mentalwellness #education #skillsdevelopment

🏫When you first meet your new co-teacher, you're going to want to make an amazing first impression. And that's natural! But some teachers unknowingly do this at the expense of telling the whole truth. Covering up how we really feel, telling white lies, or telling half-truths are some of the ways we do this in an attempt to appear more congenial. But if we are completely truthful in the beginning (while remaining tactful, of course), it might create some more challenging conversations upfront, but will make your long-term partnership so much more fruitful! 🌱 #CoTeaching #CoTeach #TeamTeach #TeamTeaching #InclusiveClassroom #InclusiveClassrooms #InclusiveEducation #SpecialEducation #SpecialEd #SpecialEdTeacher #SmallGroup #SmallGroupInstruction #Differentiation #Parternship #ProfessionalPartnership

How often do you celebrate your successes? Last Friday my daughter Ruby attended prom to mark the end of her GCSEs. It’s actually called an End of Year celebration but often either term fills parents with dread. The expense, the fuss, the after party! 🤢 There is a reason I love prom, and I’ve encouraged Ruby to do the same. Why? Too often we overlook, fail to recognise, or diminish our achievements. Maybe it’s because we don’t see them as “big” enough, don’t like being the centre of attention, or don’t want to appear that we’re “bragging” or “showing off”. Maybe that’s why three out of four partners I worked with in 2024 forgot to celebrate their promotion with family and friends? But if we don’t celebrate these moments – what do we celebrate? We are too busy focusing on the next challenge in order to take time and reflect on how far we have come. Maybe the 6 week holiday for students helps. If there was just a weekend in between GCSEs and A Levels, they too may pass up the opportunity to celebrate and focus on the next challenge instead like most adults do! Completing your GCSEs take enormous amounts of hard work, focus, determination, resolve, resilience, flexibility, adaptability, and consistency, incredible skills that will serve this generation well in the workplace in their careers and therefore deserve to be congratulated. After Uni it feels like the celebrating of achievements stops…that’s why I’m a firm Prom advocate – it’s a wonderful rite of passage that recognises how far you’ve come and looks ahead with positivity for the future. I hope that the children of today will continue to celebrate their successes throughout their lives as we all should. #Prom #RiteOfPassage #Milstone #CelebrateYourWins #Goals #Motivation #Coach #BounceForward

NYSC is humbling !!! We don't always get what we want right?? I remember saying I wasn't going to teach during my service year , it was an unrealistic expectation of mine. I mean, having a degree in Education made it too obvious that I might teach. Getting my Ppa (Place of Primary Assignment) letter was really heart breaking and difficult to accept. Regardless ,I was humbled!! I made up my mind to stay and teach , it's been three months and some weeks and I must say Teachers are doing a whole lot. It's just sad they are underpaid in this part of the world. Preparing lesson note , delivering the lesson, marking script etc, the whole process can be exhausting. Not to sound defensive but we are aware a lot of us do not work in our area of study. Only a few professions have does who studied and are practicing in their field. Just maybe , if Teachers were paid handsomely they would be a rush in this field. This part of the world people are more interested in what the responsibility will bring to the table not just having a responsibility. There's a lot of learning on the Job involved also. After school , there's a little freedom which allows you explore so many options until you get what you aspire. Its okay to try till you get what you want. That is why setting realistic goals is essential, but here's something important I'm learning . I'll keep experiencing and learning from each Job till I get to my desired Job. For these experiences are meant to shape me for whatever I aspire. Happy new week Linkedin family, I hope you had a great weekend and I wish you a great week❤️🥂☺️ This is LifeAfterSchool with Obulaikem Chijioke Boms . #linkedincreators #lifeafterschool #consistency

One of my favourite times of year when I get the green light from Tracey Partridge to come and deliver a #guestlecture to the #pgce students at University of Greenwich. On reflection the passion, and capacity to reflect I saw in the space on a Friday afternoon for over 2 hours was immense. We had laughter, tears, sadness, happiness, frustration, shock, and a range of other emotions but above and beyond everything, a real sense of cohesion amongst a group of 25-30 professionals that are passionate about young people. Conversations around #labellingtheory #attachmenttheory, various forms of oppression exercised through an outdated #educationsystem based on Freire's book '#Pedagogyoftheoppressed', Dr Bruce Perrys book '#WhatHappenedtoYou', statistics on #exclusions, 10 coins concept, and all sorts of other information created a #learningenvironment full of engaged #professionals, so hopefully everyone took something away that they can use when supporting #youngpeople in education. We refer to them as '#traineeteachers', but in all areas of life, aren't we all just trainees? Nobody knows everything, and often we forget or downplay the tacit knowledge or skills that people can bring to spaces even without qualifications. When I got offered 4.70 an hour to teach 2 #BTECSport classes as a full time tutor, because I had no 'formal teaching qualifications or experience', this really highlighted to me so many things that show how professionals will exploit people for their passions, and downplay the value a 'trainee' can bring to a space. This is a big part of why I feel so passionate about sharing my #livedexperience of #aces and exclusions and those around me that have experienced the full #SchooltoPrisonPipeline, as well as, learnings on my #educational and #professionaljourney with those coming into the profession, or already in the profession now because knowing your value is everything in this day and age so all new cohorts must be aware of theirs too. Gutted the full session did not record, but here is a little snippet that captures a moment where we discussed sanctions in school. I recollected on seeing a #seniorleader make a decision that is rarely made in a space where the power lies mostly with the adult, and not with young people, in addition to teachers rarely being held accountable for their decisions on sanctions so more often than not, it purely depends on the adults character as to whether the young person is further at risk when exposed to this power imbalance... I wonder how many people actively reflect on their own exercising of power in education spaces... 'This presentation... Your story and knowledge... This could change the world, so you must go and change the world' - PGCE student I'll hold on to that one for a while...
