Tribute to Pte Olara Jonathan It's with profound sadness that we mourn the tragic loss of our colleague, Pte Olara Jonathan. May his soul rest in eternal peace. As we reflect on this heartbreaking incident, we're reminded of the selfless dedication of our rangers, who risk their lives protecting wildlife and conservation areas. In light of this tragedy, I propose establishing a contributory scheme to support rangers and their families in times of need. This scheme would provide: 1. Lump-sum benefits for spouses and children in the event of accidental death or natural causes. 2. Retirement packages to supplement government pensions, ensuring a dignified life after service. Government pensions often fall short, leaving families vulnerable. Our proposed scheme would: 1. Alleviate financial burdens on bereaved families. 2. Demonstrate our commitment to the well-being of rangers and their loved ones. Let's honor Pte Olara Jonathan's memory by creating a safety net for those who risk everything to protect our planet's precious resources. May we stand together in solidarity, supporting one another through life's challenges. Rest in peace, Pte Olara Jonathan. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of our friend and trusted UWA ranger, Pte Olara Jonathan, who was tragically killed while protecting Uganda’s wildlife. He was shot in an encounter with armed poachers while on patrol yesterday. Jonathan’s bravery and dedication to conservation were evident in every mission we engaged with him, whether collaring elephants and lions or tirelessly monitoring wildlife on an ongoing basis in the wild. We spent quite some time with him and got to know him well and appreciate his love and dedication for his work. He became a close friend, especially to Jimmy, Denis, Michael and Innocent, and an invaluable part of our team. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Do NOT feed marine life! While out enjoying Cayman's Sharks and other marine life conditioned to expect food from humans through feeding may become more assertive. Feeding is unhealthy for fish and puts unsuspecting divers & swimmers at risk of accidental injury. An aggressive encounter with a shark or any other predators (like barracuda or moray eels) may also prompt action for the animal to be removed. It is illegal to feed marine life while in Cayman waters except for stingrays in the Wildlife Interaction Zones (WIZ). Shark feeding anywhere in Cayman waters is strictly prohibited by law. Violators will be prosecuted. Report incidents to the DoE on 916-4271 or call 911 for emergencies. Learn more at: doe.ky/marinemanners and doe.ky/marine-parks

Queensland and New South Wales Governments’ shark control programs use methods established in the 1930s. Lethal and indiscriminate baited drum lines and shark nets attempt to protect swimmers and surfers; however, their effectiveness has been scientifically disproven. They not only pose a threat to sharks, a species under great threat, but a multitude of other “protected” marine life. Voiceless recently joined forces with the Envoy Foundation to legally challenge the New South Wales Government’s shark-culling program, which has seen the routine culling of tens of thousands of sharks and other marine animals in the name of beachgoer safety since the program began. The Envoy Foundation was instrumental in creating the Nets Out Now coalition of over 50 organisations (Voiceless included) to end the lethal and destructive shark mitigation methods the NSW and QLD state governments have had in place for decades. Poaching remains a serious threat to the species, and wildlife officials struggle to protect free-ranging black rhinoceroses in much larger reserves, such as the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania, a park the size of Switzerland. South Africa and Namibia have more black rhinoceroses than any other countries, but the future of the animals outside parks and reserves is rather bleak. https://lnkd.in/gpGkeDue

🐅 In a successful joint operation, the Royal Thai Police, supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Wildlife Justice Commission, #arrested 2 wildlife traffickers in Bueng Kan Province in #Thailand on 3 June. One suspect is allegedly involved in illegal wildlife trade across #Thailand, #Vietnam, #Lao PDR, and #Myanmar. A one-month-old female tiger cub, transported from Vietnam via Lao PDR, was seized and rescued. These arrests and the tiger cub's rescue are part of Project Galvanise, which supports multinational efforts to combat wildlife crime through intelligence analysis in Southeast Asia. Project Galvanise is generously funded by the Nationale Postcode Loterij. Tigers are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and classified as a CITES Appendix I species, imposing strict regulations on international trade. Despite this, tigers continue to be trafficked for traditional medicine, jewelry, décor, and pets. Over the last century, the wild tiger population has plummeted. While they face threats from climate change, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict, the illegal tiger trade is the most imminent threat. We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with Thai law enforcement to disrupt big cat trafficking networks in Thailand and Southeast Asia and to stop the live pet trade. #wildlifecrime #ProjectGalvanise #Tigers #LivePetTrade Read more about the operation 👇 https://lnkd.in/eG3hVmmy

Queensland Government Establishes New Net-Free Zones in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Effective Today! 🎉 We are thrilled to share this momentous announcement from Australia! The Queensland Government’s announced plans to establish new Net-Free Zones in the Gulf of Carpentaria come into effect today! 🇦🇺 Shark Conservation Fund is a proud supporter of Australian Marine Conservation Society and Humane Society International's ongoing efforts to secure vital legal protections for sharks in Australia. With sawfish populations declining by over 90% due to overfishing and habitat loss, victories such as these are crucial for the survival of these unique species. 🦈 These newly established Net-Free Zones will serve as sanctuaries for a diverse array of threatened marine species beyond sawfish. Speartooth sharks, dugongs, hawksbill and green sea turtles - all vulnerable to the perils of entanglement in fishing nets – will also find refuge and protection in these Zones. Banning gillnets creates a ripple effect of species protection that extends throughout the entire marine ecosystem, ensuring the stability and health of the Gulf of Carpentaria for generations to come. We commend the team for their dedication and significant progress! 👏 Read more about Queensland’s gillnet ban here: https://bit.ly/3VeVIrD
Incredible news! 🪚🐟 The QLD Government has just announced new Net-Free Zones in the Gulf of Carpentaria – helping to protect threatened species including sawfish and speartooth sharks! The Gulf is home to some of the world’s last viable sawfish populations, but there has long been little protection against the key threat of gillnet fishing. These new Net-Free Zones will provide a vital safehaven from commercial gillnets in key habitats for sawfish and other threatened species like river sharks, dugongs, turtles and dolphins. A big thanks to our 3,400+ supporters who signed our petition calling for improved protections and helped spur the QLD Government to act - we couldn’t have done it without you! 🙌 Thank you to Shark Conservation Fund (SCF) – this outcome would not have been possible without their support. 🦈 Become a Shark Champion today to discover more ways you can help protect Australia's imperiled sharks and rays ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/geAXViKk Humane Society International | Australia
