A few year’s ago my family joined our first JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in Toronto. We were incredibly inspired by JDRF’s commitment to improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and its complications. We were overcome with emotion being surrounded by other T1D families, ambassadors, and dedicated volunteers and staff. Our hearts were filled with hope for a bright future for our son Ashton, and all Canadians living with T1D. Experiencing this profound sense of community, we knew we had to be a part of JDRF’s mission to advance T1D, to find a cure, and to accelerate the pace of research to get closer to the goal of a world without diabetes. This is why it means so much to our family to be a part of the JDRF Holiday Match program. A cure for T1D would mean everything. It would mean no more finger pricks, no more needles, no fear of complications, no life-threatening urgent low blood sugars, and no more sleepless nights. It would mean Ashton could be present in every moment of every day, instead of worrying about what the next moment may bring. It would mean no children would have to live with T1D. Today, and every day, we dream of a cure and we never give up! 💙 #givingseason #diabetesawareness

Wild Hope Now: The power of books for causes Non-profits and charities depend on the emotional and financial support of their backers. And that support is always based on a story. A story of possibility, of justice, of community. They serve to right wrongs, to fix problems, to shine a light and to make things better. I’ve discovered that a book is a powerful tool for sharing this story.

Santo 203 “Secret Snowflakes” Educators, together we can create a world where giving is the norm by providing creative opportunities for students. Our fifth grade students embraced the idea of becoming a “Secret Snowflake” by gifting to community members. One by one the Secret Snowflakes joined to form a blizzard of generosity to our neighbors and local charitable organizations. *Some took time to bake and deliver delicious goodies to neighbors *Others choose to donate to charities online. *Some handpicked gifts destined for the local Children's Hospital. *Others gave to Toys for Tots After the event, a lively discussion took place as students shared their “secret” with classmates. Reflections echoed the research of M. Ames who emphasizes that spending time enriching your community broadens your perceptions of the world. Immersing yourself in a community dedicated to positive change teaches you valuable lessons about how the world works and fosters a unique sense of purpose that often extends to other areas of your life. “The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious." - Luther.
