So a question that come out of this is: how do you factor in climate change when committing to BNG targets? If we lock into these targets commitments for 30 years, but conditions change, do we adjust the targets, if they become less viable? These commitments are being fixed into planning conditions so where does that leave us? Do we consider gene splicing of drought resistance species into native species to cope with drought conditions on the south coast and what do we do with the salmon and charr habitat creation strategies if the waters are warming at 1° per year? 🐟🌍🌡 #Climate change's impact on #plankton poses major #threat to #global #fish #supply, says study. ⚠🌊 New #UK #research reveals "hidden vulnerability" where lower levels of #phytoplankton due to rising #ocean #temperatures could have a huge knock-on effect on commercial #fishstocks. 📌📉 According to the study, published in the #journal #NatureCommunications, "when #climate #warming reduces phytoplankton levels by just 16-26% (as projected by global models in regions like the #NorthAtlantic), the carrying capacity for fish plummets by 38-55%." 🗣 "The main threat comes from reduced #nutrient supply, leading to smaller plankton, longer #foodchains, and inefficient foraging," said lead author Angus Atkinson from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML). 🗣 "Close to shore or in lakes, excess nutrients from land can cause imbalances like #harmful #algal #blooms.
