Hydrobiologist, Lake & River Rehabilitation Specialist, Ecologist & EIA/HRA practitioner, interested in delivery pragmatic BNG, Nature Based Solutions and Sustainable Development and Renewable Energy.
So a question that come out of this is: how do you factor in climate change when committing to BNG targets? If we lock into these targets commitments for 30 years, but conditions change, do we adjust the targets, if they become less viable? These commitments are being fixed into planning conditions so where does that leave us? Do we consider gene splicing of drought resistance species into native species to cope with drought conditions on the south coast and what do we do with the salmon and charr habitat creation strategies if the waters are warming at 1° per year? I'm genuinely interested to see how BNG metrics adapt with these changes. BBC News - Climate change: Seasonal shifts causing 'chaos' for UK nature https://lnkd.in/eRmTdKTY

Source: Insects Study predicts distribution changes of giant water bugs in South Korea due to climate change. A. japonicus is likely to contract northward, while D. esakii may expand northward, affecting aquatic community dynamics. Elevation affects A. japonicus, and temperature impacts D. esakii. Findings highlight climate sensitivity and inform wetland management.

🐟🌍🌡 #Climate change's impact on #plankton poses major #threat to #global #fish #supply, says study. ⚠🌊 New #UK #research reveals "hidden vulnerability" where lower levels of #phytoplankton due to rising #ocean #temperatures could have a huge knock-on effect on commercial #fishstocks. 📌📉 According to the study, published in the #journal #NatureCommunications, "when #climate #warming reduces phytoplankton levels by just 16-26% (as projected by global models in regions like the #NorthAtlantic), the carrying capacity for fish plummets by 38-55%." 🗣 "The main threat comes from reduced #nutrient supply, leading to smaller plankton, longer #foodchains, and inefficient foraging," said lead author Angus Atkinson from Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML). 🗣 "Close to shore or in lakes, excess nutrients from land can cause imbalances like #harmful #algal #blooms. But at the vast scales relevant to #climatechange, it's the lack of nutrients from deeper waters that becomes the major bottleneck," said co-author Dr. Axel Rossberg from Queen Mary University of London. https://lnkd.in/duE9Jmt6

A new study led by Dr Angus Atkinson of PML (Plymouth Marine Laboratory) has revealed a silent threat beneath the waves: climate change is significantly eroding the ocean's ability to provide fish. The findings, published in Nature Communications, reveal a hidden amplification mechanism within the marine food web, highlighting the vulnerability of our marine ecosystem. #Sustainability #climatechange #bluetransformation #blueeconomy
