Although the cooling season has begun here in Warsaw & it feels officially like Autumn, I’m still taking note of aspects of biophilic urbanism that are crucial for offering natural cooling of environment, so critical for those increasingly hot summer as well as multiples of ecological & environmental benefit as well as for multitudes of species. Unfortunately one contemporary challenge with many areas of newer development is that public green space is not prioritzed. Although the newer developments might be higher priced & seem more desirable, the lack of rich public green space is a great loss for inhabitants. The areas pictured here are older developments where pedestrian mobility & public amenities, including ample green space & natural elements, were (and are still) prioritized. What is the situation with public green space in your neighborhood? 📷 Annika || Pedestrian Space #biophilicurbanism #urbanism #greencities #urbanhealth #walkability #neighborhoodlife

Since Stephenson's original City Planning Scheme and its subsequent revisions, key documents like the Urban Design Framework (2009) and The Perth City Snapshot (2016) have shifted the focus toward resilience, ecology, and sustainability, aiming to reshape Perth as both a destination and a liveable city. Further initiatives, including the City of Perth Sustainability Strategy and the Perth City Deal, highlight this ongoing effort. This important event seeks to explore how the Ten Principles of good design might further inform strategic planning and provide a clear, actionable vision for addressing Perth's urban challenges and aspirations. https://lnkd.in/gP8wMX_n #planning #urbandesign #designwa #tenprinciples #citypolicy #capitalcity #perth #perthplanning #perthurbandesign #perthfuture #perthurbanresearchlab #curtin #dbe

As Chair and Co-chair of several Local Government Design Review Panels and an Urban Designer, I am amazed at how often poor design follows poor planning. I am also inspired by how the Local Government's commitment to design across planning and development policy can rapidly lift design standards and outcomes. So, how far should the Capital City go to champion great design? As I dragged myself through a half marathon yesterday, looking at the City from South Perth as it sat on a mirror of water, the skyline looked like a collection of glass boxes distinguished only by their tone of grey. Few were spoilt by the relics of antiquated, liveable urbanism, such as balconies and terraces, and none more than dabbled in integrating the biophilia that sat at their feet. Fortunately, living skylines do not make cities; it is streetscapes and interstitial spaces. In that regard, Perth is evolving quickly; look at the images in the 1992 City Spaces and City Life Study (Prof Jan Gehl et al. [including myself] for Perth City Council and the State of WA) and note the wins and losses over the last 30 years. We have to ask, where will we be in another 30 years? I am looking forward to this important conversation on this Wednesday night. It seems timely and critical not only for the panel but also because, right now, Francesco Maria Mancini and a handful of others are animating a conversation that could reshape the City’s future.

💡A short article reflecting on the impact of tactical urban interventions at the heart of Tallinn and their potential for improving quality of life and supporting adaptation capacity based on a 6-month empirical study by my team including Shimin 诗敏 Huang 黄, Brigita Tool and Kelli Marie Jaama commissioned by Tallinn Strategic Management Office.
Last summer, Tallinn’s historic Town Hall Square transformed from a sun-scorched cobblestone expanse into a vibrant pop-up park. 🌳 🇪🇺 As part of Tallinn’s European Green Capital 2023 designation, this initiative invited both locals and tourists to enjoy newly installed wooden benches, lounging areas, and lush plant containers equipped with educational QR codes. This transformation created a peaceful green retreat in the heart of the old town, turning what one visitor called a “stone desert” into a “biodiversity oasis.” 🐝 How can tactical urbanism improve urban environments and community life? In Molina De Segura, Murica, Spain, an innovative new home, is creating its own biome to help revitalize a region torn apart over time by development. The region, formerly defined and shaped by channels of rainwater that allowed vegetation to grow, were flattened and built over, causing the region to become markedly more arid. This project, strives to reestablish those water channels, and collects rainwater, grey water, and redistributes that water via mist, into an interior courtyard which helps vegetation flourish and excess water flows out into the surrounding region. The addition of this moisture, has already led to the growth of a breadth of local native vegetation, and in turn, the return of local animals and insects. The innovative project, looks at non traditional methods for heating and cooling indoor and outdoor spaces, utilizing various materials with naturally cooling components and the heat of the sun to warm water, the project pushes the envelope in creativity and innovation. The home looks to inspire local residents and the community to rethink their impact on their surroundings and the importance of reestablishing of ecosystems. We’re all in this together #ecofriendlyhomes #ecofriendlydesign #ecofriendlyliving #ecofriendly #regenerativedesign #sustainabledesign #sustainablecities #sustainablebuilding

What a pleasure and privilege to spend the day with one of my urbanism heroes, Salvador Rueda, talking Ecosystemic Urbanism, the qualities of great cities, and the famous Superblocks. Lots of events on the this week with him in Tāmaki Makaurau, check them out. *All successful cities are complex, compact, biodiverse, have efficient metabolism, are socially cohesive. * A city is a system of proportions. We need to know the right proportions of the ingredients for a successful city - like a good paella! (Not too much salt) *In terms of achieving right proportions of public space given to cars, it’s not a traffic problem, or an economical problem, it’s a cultural problem. *We are running out of time, we must act now.
