Ireland - Lough Neagh: An ecological catastrophe Over the course of 2023, Lough Neagh has been engulfed with an ecological disaster characterised by explosive growth of green-blue algae. Affecting the source of around 40 per cent of Northern Ireland’s drinking water, the algal bloom has caused devastation to marine and local wildlife, and it has been estimated by experts that it will take up to 21 years to restore the lough to an acceptable water quality. https://lnkd.in/eqKbZtMT

World Seagrass Day is an international day where it is celebrated on March 1st every year. On this day, it is celebrated to bring awareness about how important seagrass is for the ecosystem and also the need to protect them as well. What is seagrass? They are plants that grow in the shallow waters of the ocean and they act a vital part in the coastal ecosystems. How helpful are they? >They provide habitat and food for the marine life such as turtles, crabs and other fish and also DUGONGS!! >They also helps in preventing erosion and absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. What are their threats? >Human activities such as: Pollution, coastal developments and over fishing. So on this day, it is very important to highlight the importance of these valuable plants to the ecosystems and to discuss efforts to protect them! Drained, burned, overgrazed, polluted, extracted - peatlands need a lifeline 🔥     Peatlands support important wildlife habitats and species and play a vital role in carbon storage. Mangrove diversity ecosystems prevent land degradation along the coastal lines against the seasonal tides. The ecosystem needs urgent protection by formulating and enforcing feasible policies. The mangrove forest and landscape deserves to be declared protected areas. #Environmentalgovernance

Why should we plant trees? Trees give off oxygen that we need to breathe. Trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. As we plant more trees, let us also consider the importance of planting fruit trees in our streets, in our walkways. This will be a double benefit of environmental protection as well as providing food. 😀

The National Trust plans to create vast new areas of temperate rainforest in the south-west of England. More than 100,000 trees will be planted in north Devon to create swathes of humid woodland that will be home to plants facing extinction. Experts say the area's heavy rainfall and high humidity levels provide a unique moisture-rich environment. Temperate rainforests once covered large areas of the western coast of Britain. But the habitats have deteriorated due to air pollution, invasive species and diseases and are now one of the most endangered in the UK. #thesocialtalks #uk #environment #treeplanting

🌿 Happy World #MangroveDay! 🌍🌳 Today, we celebrate the guardians of our coasts and marine ecosystems. These resilient trees play a crucial role in protecting our coastlines, providing habitat for diverse marine life, and fighting climate change. Mangroves serve multiple social, economic and ecological functions that are critical for the coastal communities. Among others, they are capable of cleaning pollutants and sediments from inland sources and protects the open oceans. As part of our contribution to the conservative of this critical ecosystem, we recently planted 3,000 mangrove trees at the Bidii Creek in Mombasa County. Through this, we are supporting a critical habitat that pumps life to the coastal communities. #AbsaSustainabilityAgenda
