"Done well, impact investment can be activism expressed as pioneering commercial leadership." Mainstream business and finance is boring. Not boring in the sense that there aren’t intellectual challenges. But boring because I can’t motivate myself to care, other than to try and help the mainstream business scene be a better of version of itself. Sounds harsh but we really do need grow up about the function of business in society. I did my PhD on #socialentrepreneurship and touched on impact investing because it’s the capital which supports social entrepreneurs. During this a large international NGO working in the poverty alleviation space asked me to help them innovate their business model. Thinking of ways to help this organisation amplify their community development and connect to new sources of capital and impact models, led me to impact investing. The machinery of the private sector is probably the most powerful set of things we’ve ever created. Business has delivered so much in terms of economic development, human flourishing, and poverty alleviation. But it’s not a necessary condition of our economic growth and development to degrade the environment, exploit people, and systemically exclude social groups. So, let’s change that. Impact investment is one opportunity to do business, investment, and the economy differently. That insight led to the formation of Soul Capital. Done well, impact investment can be #activism expressed as pioneering commercial leadership. 💭 Many social enterprise leaders are very wary about taking on investment. How can social investors turn this challenge into an opportunity? We find that many leaders of social enterprises are wary of taking on traditional debt, especially from investors they do not know or trust, or who lack similar lived experiences. This “trust deficit” is highest among organisations with Black, Asian, or ethnically diverse leadership. At Sumerian, our pre-investment support begins with meeting people where they are and taking the time to understand their goals while explaining the pros and cons of social investment. We consistently find that the best reassurance a prospective investee can receive comes from talking to one of our existing investees about their personal experience with investment and the added value beyond just money. This is particularly true for Black, Asian, or ethnically diverse leaders, who build trust and understanding by speaking with others who share similar backgrounds. Understanding your designs is critical for enhancing program/product effectiveness, and allows funders and investors to use their funds more costeffectively. We will also discuss the differences and relationships between impact assessment, SROI assessment, and ESG assessment, and other forms of assessment based on certain impact standards.

Last weekend was a game-changer for me at the Global Governance Initiative's Impact Investment & Entrepreneurship Masterclass, the one I've eagerly awaited. This deep dive left an imprint on my understanding of how impactful investing and sustainable entrepreneurship are key players in reshaping our world. I'm convinced these aren't just nice-to-haves; they're the essentials we urgently need. They demand engagement from innovative minds committed to positive change. Facilitated by the insightful Shatakshi Sharma, Naman Shrivastava, and Deepa Iyer, the masterclass was a treasure trove of knowledge. Over two intense days, our community explored the foundational aspects of impact investing, focusing on diverse types, with a spotlight on humanitarian investing. Tackling a challenging case study, we discerned crucial distinctions between outcome and output and gained skills to measure them effectively. The sessions also unveiled various frameworks and instruments integral to impact investing. Recognizing systemic issues as a precursor to impactful projects and having clarity on core missions, tangibles, and non-negotiables emerged as prerequisites for meaningful endeavors. Understanding the importance of capital and how to raise it, along with navigating the entire ecosystem, opened my eyes. It is high time we emphasize the reality of our planet—limited resources and human-induced problems. It's time for collective responsibility, focusing on tangible solutions instead of pointing fingers at ineffective and morally corrupt global leaders. Being a responsible capitalist is crucial. This experience fortified my belief in adopting strategic, solution-oriented approaches to effect substantial change. Armed with this enriched understanding, I'm more determined than ever to contribute to the positive transformation our world urgently needs.
