Advocate for building equitable & supportive research environments for the next generation of scientists
🔔OPPORTUNITY ALERT 🔔: LPSLI is a great leadership program for those in staff positions in STEM (but not limited to this) with limited professional development options. The best parts of my experience were: 1) getting the intentional time to think about my professional priorities and goals 2) getting help trying to map out a path towards centering those priorities & goals and 3) an expanded network and community to help me get there!! If you are eligible I hope you’ll not just consider applying…. BUT ACTUALLY DO IT!!
LPSLI Applications are open! The Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (LPSLI) provides premier training for motivated professionals in STEM from populations that have been historically excluded and, as a result of exclusion, are underrepresented in STEM. The #LPSLI program will occur June 10th-14th, 2024 at the HHMI Headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Applications close April 12th, 2024. Professionals interested in advancing their leadership in a manner that is inclusive and equitable in all sectors of STEM (academia, industry, non-profit, and government), are encouraged to apply. So grateful for my classmates (and family) on this journey at USC Rossier School of Education. Another term completed, this one with supposedly the toughest class in the sequence. Two more courses and a completed dissertation, and this doctoral program will be done. #fighton #highered #highereducation #education #professionaldevelopment #leadership #nonprofitleadership #nonprofits

This holiday season, "Give the Gift of Mentorship" to first-generation college students in Chicago. At iMentor, we believe 1:1 mentorship for first-generation students on Chicago’s South and West Sides increases the chance for them to enroll, persist, and graduate from #college. 🎓 A college degree is the most direct path to economic mobility – a four-year college graduate earns $1M more over their lifetime than someone who doesn’t go to college making a bachelor’s degree worth 84% more than a high school diploma. For most students applying to college, they turn to individuals in their network, or their family’s network, for support and guidance, but for first-generation college going students, social networks and professional resources that specifically open access to higher educational pathways are limited. Your #GivingTuesday2023 donation at any level supports the next generation of leaders for #Chicago. Please consider a monthly or a one-time donation in support of our work. Whatever you can give will make an incredible difference! https://lnkd.in/gpaAWbUd

We are back for another year of well-intentioned work on behalf of students, staff, and families! In-building, on-site school leadership is unique to most leadership positions in corporate, non-profit, and education spaces. The stakeholders and opinions are vast. It’s a pan with hot, hot oil and high stakes. →Hundreds (if not thousands) of students. →One to four guardian grown-ups per student. →On average, for every 20 students in a school there is 1 staff member—that’s a lot of staff! →Advisory and oversight committees: PTSA, PTA, CSC, PAC, SLT to name a few. →District leadership. →Community organizations. The pan is hot; always! If we are honest, it’s what draws us to the work. It probably draws you to your work. We love doing challenging, dynamic work with people we like and trust on behalf of children. Does that resonate with you? Let’s run it back!

Last year, 65.6% of all Indiana 3rd grade Black students passed IREAD. Our Gary school was behind the state average at 60.8%. But this year, 71.1% of our 3rd graders passed the reading test while the state average is 68.6%. We improved by 10.25 pts, more than 3X the state’s improvement rate of 3, and 5X the local district’s improvement rate of 2 points. What did we do to improve? We worked with Marian University Indianapolis Center for Vibrant Schools for “science of reading” training for the past two years. We tested our second graders, too. And, we made a concerted effort to hire stronger (and licensed) teachers. Great leadership. Great teachers. Great partners. Great results. And, we will do better this year. Before signing off, I think it is important to note our Gary school also beat Indianapolis Public Schools in both performance and improvement on IRead. IPS came in at 59.8% pass rate which is down .7 points from last year. Why do I bring this up? Because Gary does not receive the same philanthropic and education-improvement supports Indy schools receive. Imagine what scores would look like if Gary schools received similar attention.
