#Buildingdesigners and #homeowners often comment that there are a lack of case studies of #energyefficiency #renovation #retrofit #casestudies for Irish, or even #Dublin, house types. If you are one of them, you should check out https://lnkd.in/e3HcapVt.
BUILT TO LAST
🔅 There are 7 case studies where EE renovations are explored and seven where EE renovations are proposed. In the latter group two levels of EE interventions are proposed. In all cases there is an awareness of potential heritage and quality risk.
🔅 The houses date from 1752 to 1942. Some are on the register of protected structures.
🔅 Walls are built of solid brick, cavity wall, rubble-built and mass concrete construction.
🔅 In the proposed renovation group, airtightness testing, U-value measurement added perspective. DEAP assessments are deliberately presented using all allowed default values alongside DEAP assessments using measured values where available.
🔅 The case studies were mostly surveyed and written-up in 2013-2014 and then revised in 2019 to bring them in line with the latest version of #TechnicalGuidance Document L (2019), supporting Part L of the #BuildingRegulations. Notably, this revision included reference to the, then new, category of #MajorRenovation and the increasing role of #heatpumps and solar panels in EE retrofit strategies.
🔅 Now in 2024, with standards and innovation in retrofit technology continuing to grow apace (not least #ZeroEmissionsBuilding, #zeb), we still need studies like #Builttolast to explore how one might localise such measures sensitively in a real house on a real street. Enjoy!
GRATITUDE
☀ I'm delighted the six solid wall U-value measurements carried out in 2014 (with help of Richard Fitton) will finally be presented, alongside the larger body of measurements from #FabTrads research project, University College Dublin, by Caroline Engel Purcell at #PLEA2024 #WROCŁAW, Poland, in late June 2024.
☀ The BTL project was long-delayed for many reasons, not least my hubris and desire to address retrofit comprehensively! Like an iceberg, the write up of the research project is far larger than shown on the case study website!
☀ I am grateful for the patience and wisdom of fellow author Fergal McGirl and the technical input of project partner Michael Hanratty of IHER Energy Services Ltd. Valuable contributions were made by Calina Ferraro Ann-Marie Fallon Beñat Arregi Dara Stewart Archie O'Donnell John Morehead Toby Cambray.
