Spoiler: It’s not really about buffalo wings. Recently I shared an older article I read from Harvard Business Review about what great leaders do differently. I also mentioned that great leaders know their people and create that alchemy which makes a great team. In this context, let’s switch that to “secret sauce”. Per Bruce Ditman: “THERE IS NO SECRET SAUCE”! Upon further reflection, I honestly need to agree. Like in the movie #FieldofDreams “if you it build they will come”, so if you invest time and energy into honing your craft, you will master it. Being a great leader isn’t innate, it is a skill anyone can learn. I am grateful to work at Huge where we have a couple of growth and development gurus like J.D. Maverick. You're thinking Top Gun, right? Well, stand down Mr. Cruise, there's another narrative in town. Back in the 1800s, a fella named Samuel Augustus Maverick rolled into cowboy central AKA Texas, USA. Fresh outta law school, Sam put down some roots, became a big-shot landowner, and even played mayor of San Antonio. At one point he acquired some cattle as a debt payment, but didn't really care for the whole ranching gig, so let them roam free, living their best cow lives. Unlike other ranchers around those parts who all branded their cows with hot irons to claim ownership, Sam was like "nah" - he figured any unbranded cows were obviously his. 🐄 Thus, the term "maverick" first entered the conversation to describe an unbranded calf, before evolving over time to describe anyone too independently-minded, too against-the-grain, to stick to the standard script. Someone who walks their own path, just like ol' mate Sam - maverick by name and by nature. Interesting how the horses will unfold by how people before them sets the stage! It is the same way with children. What makes a trail horse? Authoritarianism. What makes a cutting horse? Enlightenment! Why are we seeing more people unfold into trail horses than cutting horses? The lone horse, the mass shooter, the assassin, what triggered that horse? Nothing can be understood independently of the environment, why does schools look like factories and prisons? To get a trail horse, you must mortify the horse into spiritual death! Do we need more trail horses? Or do we need imagination and curiosity and an ability to improv! Sanctification, what does that horse look like?
