This is a significant step forward for environmental justice in New York City. The EJNYC Mapping Tool is not only a powerful resource for understanding the complex intersections of health, race, and environmental hazards but also a catalyst for meaningful change. By leveraging data to inform policy and community actions, we can better address the historical inequities that persist today. It’s encouraging to see a commitment to using these insights for targeted investments that truly benefit the most affected communities. How can we further engage local residents in this process to ensure their voices are heard? #EnvironmentalJustice #CommunityEngagement

Buro Happold is proud to announce the debut of EJNYC: A Study of Environmental Justice Issues in New York City, a first of its kind, comprehensive study on environmental inequities facing the city. Our report is part of the wider Environmental Justice NYC (EJNYC) initiative that is working toward a city-wide environmental justice strategy. The report analyzes various hazards including toxin exposure, summer heat vulnerability, flood risks and transit access. The report is also equipped with a mapping tool that illustrates which neighborhoods are most at risk. The study reveals that disadvantaged areas in the city are more likely to experience health disparities due to pollution, emissions, waste and flooding. Our report is helping bring these issues to light in hopes of achieving environmental equity for all New Yorkers. New Hampshire Public Radio - Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has launched a $2 million Urban Forest Equity Grant program funded by the Inflation Reduction Act to improve the tree canopy in disadvantaged communities. New England is warming faster than the average global temperature increase, according to one Massachusetts study, and the Environmental Protection Agency says Connecticut warmed twice as much as the rest of the continental U.S. during the 1900s. These increasing temperatures are only made more severe in Connecticut’s cities due to the urban heat island effect. Daytime temperatures in cities can be up to 7 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than more rural areas because man-made structures absorb and re-emit heat more than natural heat sinks, like trees. Our Ports contribute 3% of global GHG emissions. In the US, there is a new wave of federal funding coming to address this problem. But what are ports ACTUALLY going to do with it? And how can the solutions benefit the communities who are most impacted? Read below.
How can we improve the nation’s ports while enhancing environmental justice and public health for surrounding communities? A new report with Environmental Defense Fund, “Practical Pathways for Port Decarbonization and Environmental Justice,’ outlines best practices for net zero-aligned maritime activity in light of recent federal opportunities, which offer U.S. ports an unprecedented opportunity to access funding to upgrade their infrastructure and accelerate their transition to zero emissions, while addressing environmental justice concerns. What an exciting report completed by my colleagues at Arup on the intersection of port decarbonization and environmental justice. I am reminded of the massive port operation back home in Savannah that has been projected to grow by 60 percent over the next few years. I am also reminded of the increased air, water, traffic, and noise pollution that correlates with communities situated near a heavy industry presence like the ports. Interventions like hyperlocal air quality monitoring and community engagement are discussed in the report (just like I discussed in my MFA thesis from Savannah College of Art and Design last spring!) as ways that ports can take a collaborative, restorative approach to their relationships with neighboring communities. The report further makes the business case for port decarbonization, and identifies funding opportunities (e.g. Justice40), case studies (e.g. San Pedro's Clean Air Action Plan), and frameworks for orienting a sustainability strategy. Georgia Ports Authority is referenced in the report for their GHG accounting and electrification initiatives, but I am curious how they, and other Savannah port stakeholders, could leverage Arup's research here to spur their sustainability transition even further.
