Let's keep that Monday Motivation high and introduce you to someone truly inspiring! It's time to meet our summer intern Noelle Mercer. Please join in our excitement and give her a lovely and warm hello! "I decided to be a law clerk with SLC because I wanted my first legal work experience to be within the community, directly helping people. SLC's emphasis on LGBTQ+ civil rights was interesting because it is uniquely enmeshed in politics and a relatively new issue in case law. SLC does important work that impacts people's everyday lives, and I am honored to contribute this summer!" MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHILE INTERNING WITH SLC: I look forward to applying my legal knowledge to real-world problems. I want to elevate my legal research and writing skills and better understand how I will use these skills in my future practice. FUN FACT: I was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida! I attended the University of Florida for my B.S. in General Psychology and minored in Women's Studies. One fun fact about myself is that I am a hot yoga teacher! Yoga is one of my favorite things besides being a law student. FUTURE GOALS: Whatever area of law I practice in, I want to serve my community and work directly with individuals. I am particularly interested in constitutional law, civil rights work, and how environmental issues intersect with social justice. A law degree is a powerful tool that lawyers use for the betterment of society and the representation of all, and that is a responsibility that I am excited to take on. #meettheteam #interns #interning #internpositions #slcinterns #lawinterns #lawfirmlife #lawyerlife #socialjustice #civiljustice #probonolawfirm #floridalawfirm

You are looking at a proud law student about to intern this summer at Advancement Project! Advancement Project is a civil rights organization that utilizes a movement-lawyering and community-centered racial justice approach to support grassroots movements in communities of color across the country. I will work in their 3 focus areas: - Power & Democracy Program: to protect our right to vote and ensure that voting is free, fair, accessible, and inclusive. - Justice Project: challenges systems of policing, incarceration, and criminalization. - Opportunity to Learn Program: examines, exposes and reforms practices that lead to the criminalization of students and challenges the privatization of public education. I am THRILLED to be participating in their vision of "a future where people of color are free – where they can thrive, be safe and exercise power." {Alt text describes this photo, which I took immediately after my interview. I had no sense of whether I would be offered the internship, but I wanted to solidify my absolute joy at the privilege of connecting with a dream organization!} #RacialJustice #CivilRights #VotingRights #JusticeForAll

❗️❗️Attention❗️❗️ All women in law: Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing – my internship experience highlights the importance of trusting your instincts and setting workplace boundaries. During my internship at the Court, I had an experience that underscored the importance of vigilance and boundaries in professional relationships. An older advocate extended his card to me, seemingly to network. As a first-generation lawyer, I saw this as a valuable opportunity to expand my professional circle. However, it soon became clear that his intentions were far from profession. Receiving messages at odd hours and experiencing inappropriate proximity in Court led me to discover, through inquiries, that this individual has a history of predatory behavior towards women advocates and interns. This incident serves as a stark reminder that we must always prioritize our safety and be cautious of those who may exploit our trust. It's crucial to establish and maintain professional boundaries and seek guidance when something feels off. To my fellow interns and young professionals and advocates, trust your instincts, seek advice, and don't hesitate to speak up if you encounter similar situations. Let's support each other and create a safer, more respectful environment for everyone.#Awareness #ProfessionalBoundaries #LegalCommunity #WomenInLaw #SafeWorkEnvironment
