When HR Directors and CEO's ask me what sets me apart from all the other recruiters out there... I think it is very essential in the recruiting market to create a strong personable rapport with your candidates. So much that they tell you things that they might be too afraid to bring up or mention on an interview. Things that can ultimately be worked through with a recruiter as their advocate. I speak to my candidates at least 2-3 times before they even are set up with an interview, and then I am there for support and guidance until the very end of the process with an accepted offer. And even then I will check in with them after they start their new position to make sure they are happy and that everything is going smoothly. Not enough Recruiters think about how their process 'feels'. I'm not just talking about Agencies. Internal Recruiters too, And any line manager of anytime embarking on their latest talent hunt. Not enough of you think about how your actions, your writing, your processes make people actually feel. A good recruitment process is about so much more than words on job specifications or adverts. So much more than the same old competency based questions you've always asked. You need to do better. You need to empathise with your desired talent pool and ask yourself, "How does our process make someone feel?" From the moment an advert or JD is read, to the arrival in a carpark, the reception, all the way through the interviews, to making an offer or giving a rejection. I had a role accepted this morning in a tight competitive situation with another agency (who had presented a different role), Our client won, with their chosen candidate picking them. Because of how she felt about their culture, their warmth, their integrity and authenticity. And now the other client is back to sq1. Great processes are about far far more than just getting by, doing the basics. The best businesses secure the best talent for a reason. Speed to Lead. Senior Living lives and breathes by this. The irony is that it does not apply to the recruiting end when working with an agency. The average time for a candidate to be seen by the Hiring Manager after we submit them to a role is 8 days. 8 days. Here is what can happen in 8 days when a candidate does not have direction: -> They apply to other roles. -> Another recruiter snags them and submits them to another role. -> They might be in an interview process and get an offer and a start date. -> They lose interest and ghost. -> They lose respect and interest in the company to whom they were submitted. Apply the same speed of a community lead to a candidate submission. We cannot "keep them warm" for an extended period of time if there is not a blanket, space heater, or campfire of direction and next steps. Chances are high that the candidate will go in a different direction if left on hold. Senior Living has a small talent pool. As a recruiter, my goal is to make a meaningful impact on people's lives. While it may be my job, I never lose sight of the fact that for the candidates I work with, it’s a huge life decision. This allows them to understand that I am there to support them and be their advocate when I can. 🗨 Providing Guidance: I always tell the candidates I speak with that I am a very transparent person and I will tell them how it is. I will support them through screening all the way up to an offer. I will always act as a sounding board to candidates if they feel like they need to chat through situations. 🤗 Supporting Throughout: Being there every step of the way, from initial contact to successful placement and beyond is where you will stand out as a recruiter. Ensuring that they know how to contact you is so important! It's a privilege to play a part in someone’s career journey, and I strive to handle it with the care, respect, and dedication it deserves. Ever wonder what to expect when speaking with a recruiter? Typically, you should look for these 3 things. 1.) To begin the call, the onus is on the recruiter to explain the position and situation of the vacancy. 2.) The call should be transitioned into your background and pointed questions around your skill-set as they relate to the opening. 3.) Lastly, there should be a natural dialog between your questions and their responses. Who should expect to hear them explain why their company is so good to work for. If the position doesn't make sense, there isn't a single good question asked, and they haven't made it clear why they love working at their company... maybe you should consider passing on the opportunity. Recruiters can be a strong indicator of the culture and health of an organization. It isn't the only indicator you should look for but it's a big one. Flexible interview processes allow companies to recruit the best talent. Period. Story time. Yesterday I received an offer and acceptance for a candidate who was looking for a permanent healthcare role. However, the process was anything but smooth. 2 days before the first interview, she had to leave the country to be by her Dad’s side. Rightfully so, this job and process fell on the list of priorities for her and I approached the client honestly about what was happening. My goal: do right by the candidate so that life circumstances didn’t stop her from getting the job she worked so hard for. Her background was perfect so rather than complain or go with someone else, they listened to me, and found a solution to work with the situation. After 2 virtual interviews at very weird hours and an offer, she accepted a new job while 7,000 miles away.
