This year, inspired by the power of the first-ever IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress held in 2022, IUCN will host one Africa Conservation Forum (ACF) combining all three sub-regions. About 500 representatives of Union constituents, partners and supporters will gather for the five-day event in Nairobi, Kenya. The ACF is one of the leading platforms for sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and connecting key stakeholders in nature and biodiversity #conservation from different regions. Unpacking the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area - KAZA TFCA Summit: Been making a reflection on the recently held KAZA Heads of States Summit and made few observations. I will take some few days unpacking the proceedings of the Summit. When Nations join hands for a common cause, they become a formidable force. The recent getting together of Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area - KAZA TFCA Member states to launch a new destination brand, "Rivers of Life,” is testimony the commitment of the leadership to promote conservation, sustainable tourism, and community empowerment in the five Partner States. Some key points about the Kaza TFCA Summit: 1. It brings together the political leadership from the five Kaza member countries to discuss issues related to the conservation and sustainable development of the Kaza Trans-frontier Area. 2. Topics discussed include wildlife conservation, tourism development, community involvement, and joint management of shared natural resources across international boundaries. 3. The Summit is aimed at strengthen political support, coordination and collaboration among the Kaza partner countries for effective transboundary natural resource management. 4. It provided a platform for the member states to review progress made, agree on priorities, and give strategic direction for the Kaza program going forward. 5. The poll results are in on ’The biggest obstacle to realising Africa's full wildlife economic potential’. Insufficient regulation had been thought to be the primary barrier. However, the true tale of African wildlife conservation reveals a more nuanced situation. Historically, African wildlife conservation was centrally managed by government agencies. Recently, governance has shifted towards a more decentralised model with diverse stakeholders involved. Still, ensuring equitable distribution of conservation benefits between wealthier and poorer African nations and communities remains an ongoing hurdle. Wildlife populations are decreasing across much of Africa, largely due to habitat destruction and overhunting. As the human population rises, more land is converted for agriculture and development, displacing wildlife. Current hunting and consumption levels cannot be sustained long-term anywhere on the continent. Substantial wildlife populations still exist, primarily where robust legal protections are enforced. If overexploitation and habitat loss continue unchecked, the outcome will be further species extinctions and biodiversity declines. Additionally, productive ecosystems that many rural African communities depend on for their livelihoods and well-being will degrade. Helpful lessons from #SADC about regional cooperation in tourism & conservation in #Africa. Imagine the "safari" potential of #Gambela 🇪🇹 and #SouthSudan where seasonal migration of wildlife by their millions occurs every year. (ሠላሙ ቢኖር) Second only to what happens every year across the Serengeti 🇹🇿 and Kenya 🇰🇪. Such is the significant tourism potential at its best that could, if done right, attract tens of millions of nature-loving visitors (& B/💰) in many parts of Africa for having preserved intact a "natural" capital. 🇪🇺s, 🇺🇸s & Asians have long hunted to extinction (and eaten) most of their wild animals 🤭, and are no longer in a position to compete on this sector, but left to only pay-per-view.

The ongoing COP28 Conference brought The East African to explore conservation and community strategies that are supporting climate resilience in Community Led Conservancies in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda by Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association, Community Wildlife Management Areas Consortium, and Umoja Highlights - Local communities in Makame WMA establish grazing banks as insurance for livestock during dry periods, they have also reduced protection costs to $23 per square metre and led to 93 percent reduction in poaching. - KWCA actively addresses a 68 percent decline in Kenya’s wildlife population over four decades, they actively influence national policies and contributions to climate resilience and community development. - 18 member conservancies under Umoja's network contribute to climate-resilient conservation.
