🔔 ICYMI: 🧡 “September marks Hunger Action Month, and today, we also pay tribute to the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. 🇺🇸 Hunger is a year-round challenge, but this month and this day serve as a reminder to come together and make a difference. Millions of people across the country, including families and children, face food insecurity every day. After the September 11th attacks, David Paine and Jay Winuk—who lost his brother Glenn, a volunteer firefighter—sought to redefine this day by making it one of service. What started as a simple idea has grown into the largest day of service in America, with over 30 million people dedicating their time to help others each year. At Ridiculous Engineering, we’ve committed to service by raising awareness about hunger and supporting the millions of families facing food insecurity. Today, as we reflect on the significance of this movement, we encourage everyone to get involved. September is Hunger Action Month! Hunger exists in every neighborhood. Food insecurity is at all-time record levels. No matter where you call home, hunger lives HERE, but so does help. Hunger relief organizations are in crisis. Especially those in rural areas. When I say hunger relief I mean the food shelves/pantries, school pantries and organizations doing the actual WORK Why are they in crisis? Answer: the need is the HIGHEST it’s ever been, they’re small organizations that don’t have the budgetary capacity to expand, they don’t have the human capacity to serve and the people above them making decisions don’t understand what is truly happening in rural communities nor do they have the compassion to physically come help. Our rural community organizations need help in every way possible. It’s time for us to show our human compassion and capabilities

This past Tuesday was Hunger Action Day! CEO Scott Rumpsa joined The Morning Mix on Fox 17 to share how neighbors like you can help nourish our neighbors and build a stronger, healthier communtiy. Hunger doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Families who struggle to access the food they need often face other challenges, and a setback in one area creates a ripple effect across systems: education, childcare, employment, housing, healthcare, food, finances, and transportation. Complex problems require holistic solutions - that’s why we combine healthy food access, resource navigation, financial empowerment, and street outreach to build a community where all of our neighbors have what they need to thrive, and no one faces challenges alone. Working together, we achieved some big wins for hunger relief this year–and we’re already looking ahead to what’s next. We successfully advocated for new funding totaling more than $10 million for the hunger relief system. Included in that total is $5 million for the six food banks serving Minnesota to source and distribute food at no cost to our food shelf partners statewide. We also advocated for additional funding for struggling food shelves, ultimately securing $3.4 million in emergency funds. And $2 million for Tribal food sovereignty efforts. In addition to direct investments in the hunger relief network, the legislature also provided the funding necessary to implement Summer EBT, which will help families who struggle with food when the school year is out. We also worked with anti-hunger allies to expand access to SNAP for college students and put Minnesota on the path to a Medicaid waiver to address health-related social needs like housing and nutrition. Taken together, this represents significant progress towards addressing record-high (and still rising) hunger in Minnesota – but we know that it will not be enough to reverse the trend. That is why we are already hard at work engaging with neighbors, food shelves, anti-hunger allies, and our root cause partners about priorities for 2025.
