This is really insightful. Reporting shouldn’t just be what your non-profit did in a month or a granting period, it should also be a way for funders to look at the needs of nonprofits and how they can help support them or who in there philanthropic network can they reach out on behalf of their grantees that could provide that support. To me reporting should be more than assessing the work that the grantees are doing on behalf of the funder, but in addition assessing the organization as a whole, specifically, how to support nonprofits long term. As a example strengthening their philanthropic and fundraising networks to do the work long past one grant.
“Good ideas abound from grassroots leaders, but examples of how funder accountability is put into practice are often harder to come by.” See what else Lora Smith has to say in the article, “How to Flip the Script on Foundation Reporting”, the fifth installment in a series coproduced with Justice Funders: https://bit.ly/3X9B7EQ

Nonprofit Founders Club, Nonprofit Nation Fundraising Success Roadmap, Author, Fundraising Mentor/Guide help you implement your fundraising strategies.
I find when Founders have misconceptions about nonprofits and grant writing, they make some serious mistakes. When I was writing grants, these were the mistakes Founders made and the misconceptions that led to those mistakes. Understanding these misconceptions is the first step in not making the same mistakes.

April is #SecondChanceMonth and #FinancialCapabilityMonth, so we're beginning with a fitting quote for both occasions. If you didn't know, Bryan Stevenson is a public interest lawyer and the founder of Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit that provides legal representation to prisoners and defendants who are poor, possibly wrongfully convicted and/or without effective representation. Mr. Stevenson is the author of "Just Mercy," in which he wrote, "The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned.” This month, we'll share our role in serving historically and economically marginalized communities—and why everyone deserves access to the financial knowledge, capital and resources to thrive. #FinancialEmpowermentForAll #Equity #Justice

"Oftentimes, we do incremental things that actually disrupt our ability to be able to get to justice. And we say, well, since justice is so far out, or justice isn’t possible, then it doesn’t matter, we just need to take this win in the near term. And that can’t happen anymore. We have to be able to orient our day-to-day work, even if it’s small, on a path to justice, and make those hard choices in this near term that sometimes we have to make in order to adhere to that principle of justice and not take the easy win. Or, if we do take the easy win, acknowledge what we’ve done, because now we’ve created another thing that has to be undone." One interesting angle on advocacy are the efforts some people devote to prodding certain key players to get more involved. In sectors like philanthropy, there can be a reluctance because it seems too political. As founder of the Center for Community Foundation Policy Leadership, longtime criminal justice reform advocate Stephen Saloom has been focused on encouraging and supporting community foundations to advocate on their issues. As Stephen shared on the podcast, the strongest case for doing so traces back to these organizations' stated missions. Community foundations' missions typically commit them to the well-being of the local populace in the broadest terms—as broadly as any governmental body or public official. So it's only logical, Stephen argues, that community foundations should get engaged in questions of policy that affect the local community. https://lnkd.in/gbzzT-Ba

"To move forward, our focus should be on how to achieve equality and justice for future generations where the country has failed in the past." In Fortune, Business for Good's Ed Mitzen discusses why the recent court ruling dismissing the case of the Tulsa Massacre survivors should be a wake-up call for leaders to prioritize equality and justice for the future, and where to start in the local community. #BusinessforGood #TSEClientwork Read the full piece 👇 : https://lnkd.in/eAYF-Kxj
