See our founder and CEO's unsolicited advice to Press Forward, who just announced their $100,000 investments in 200 local, community and ethnic news outlets. Of the 200 Press Forward grantees, 3 are current Pivot Fund grantees. Read more👇🏽
Every story matters. Every voice matters. Let’s pivot toward a brighter, more equitable future in journalism together. ✊🏾🗞️
When Press Forward was launched a year ago, I urged them not to overlook small, local news outlets serving communities of color. Their announcement yesterday of $100,000 investments in 200 local, community and ethnic news outlets showed they have spent the year learning and listening. To show my appreciation, here’s some more unsolicited advice: 1. Don’t let this be one-and-done. $100,000 is a huge improvement over the small, conditional grants typical of journalism philanthropy, and small publishers are incredibly resourceful. However, getting to sustainability takes time, especially if your audience isn’t wealthy. 2. Give the grantees access to culturally competent wraparound services provided by people familiar with the unique challenges of BIPOC publishers. 3. Keep stretching your definition of a journalistic outlet. A journalist who publishes strictly on social may not look like a traditional news publisher, but they are simply following their audiences, who are increasingly turning to social media for news and information. Meanwhile, I’m grateful for our alignment. Of the 200 Press Forward grantees, three are current Pivot Fund grantees, and I directed grants to 18 others when I ran the Racial Equity in Journalism Fund at Borealis Philanthropy. It’s terrific to see journalism philanthropy recognize small, hyperlocal publishers who can make the future of #localnews more inclusive than its past.

Laura Weffer, the trailblazing journalist behind Venezuela’s renowned outlet Efecto Cocuyo and award-winning investigations like the Panama Papers and Suisse Secrets, is turning her investigative prowess toward Georgia’s local politics. Now, as part of The Pivot Fund's inaugural fellowship, she joins forces with Sahar Akbarzai, an Emmy Award-winning journalist from CNN, to focus on stories that matter most to Georgia's diverse communities. 📰 With just weeks before the U.S. presidential election, Weffer and Akbarzai are diving deep into issues like voting rights and economic inequality, alongside independent newsrooms supported by The Pivot Fund. This fellowship isn’t just about reporting; it’s about reshaping the media landscape by ensuring the voices heard truly represent the communities they serve. From Panama Papers to what she jokingly calls the “Georgia Papers,” Laura Weffer is set to uncover the next big story—right in her backyard. 🎤 Tracie Powell, CEO of The Pivot Fund, puts it best: “This is about changing who gets to tell the stories.” Excited to see how this powerhouse team will impact the future of journalism in Georgia! #Journalism #InvestigativeReporting #ThePivotFund #LocalNews #MediaDiversity #GeorgiaElections
