The Northern Endurance Partnership is proposing an underground, inshore pipeline to secure offshore storage in the North Sea by transporting carbon dioxide generated by industrial operations in the Humber Region. It was interesting to watch the recent National Press Club of Australia address from Jeff Dimery from Alinta Energy. If you haven't, and you're interested in energy, and the energy transition, it's not a bad way to spend an hour (or less if you tend to watch stuff on 1.5x like me). Whilst social licence gets a brief mention, the bigger takeaways are in the economic space. Partly around project costs and finance, mostly in the direct assertion that future electricity, as we transition, will cost more. Reflecting on the recent CSIRO survey into community attitudes towards renewables (https://lnkd.in/g23eW67M) which generally indicates support for renewables, as long as they don't cost more, there's a clear source of future conflict emerging here. California, where I currently find myself, has the highest cost of electricity in the US - and a material proportion of people (~20%) are behind on their utility bills. It raises interesting questions about how a just energy transition occurs, as the costs of electricity are generally easier to quantify, far more personal, and easier for consumers to understand, than the costs of climate change. The role of grants and subsides to support the development of renewables, and decarbonisation more broadly, has been a key theme of my learnings here so far. It's already happening to some degree, but makes me wonder, from a policy perspective, how much more supportive consumers would be if the government made greater investment in things like new transmission and renewable generation and storage (with their tax dollars), rather than them paying the cost directly in the form of higher power bills. #energytransition #grants #subsidies #costofliving #justtransition

Earlier this year... I had the honor in representing the state at a regional workshop on the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of Geenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships. The event gathered more than 80 maritime stakeholders from 18 countries and territories in the Caribbean region. The objective of this event was to focus on challenges and opportunities surrounding decarbonization of the maritime transport sector for Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). https://lnkd.in/e3MknPXT
