We’ve had enough, we’re challenging traditional views... Last week we attended a peer group session held by MDHUB led by Helen Bailey discuss the concept of a 4-day work week. In principle it sounds wonderful, same pay, one less day of work but what’s the reality? In 2022 researchers from Cambridge University ran the world’s largest four-day week trial and found that working one day fewer increased productivity, reduced burnout, and increased wellbeing. Seems like a no-brainer but lots of questions came up for us; what would the perception of others be? How would we manage client expectations? How would the other 4 days look like? What would it mean for the business as a whole? We also acknowledged the privilege that comes with the choice to even work 4 days a week. However, it did get us thinking, how could we experiment with how we use our time to ensure we show up as our best selves for our clients? We’re a small, agile, remote first business so we’re in a unique position to be more purposeful in the way we work. How could that look? Watch this space! #challengetradition #mdhub #fourdayweek #wellbeing #flexibleworking #hustlehouse #leadershipdevelopment

In November 2023, after a successful six-month trial, Truii officially adopted a four-day work week, following the 100-80-100 model: 100% pay for 80% of the hours, with 100% business efficiency. Truii operates Tuesday to Friday, with a 32-hour work week (four 8-hour days), and the company is closed on Mondays. The team all work from home on Tuesdays and Fridays, and all Brisbane-based staff come into the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays. During the trial, we surveyed the team, and the results were overwhelmingly positive: 👉 No one reported increased stress with the switch to the 32-hour week 👉 100% of the team supported the change, citing no delays in work delivery 👉 The team reported improved work-life balance and in fact reduced stress 👉 Company revenue increased. As company founders, we’ve found more headspace to focus on growing the business rather than just managing it day-to-day, which has had a transformative effect. Additional benefits we’ve seen from the shift include: 👉 Communication processes were refined for smoother collaboration 👉 Standard operating procedures were implemented to streamline repeatable tasks 👉 Clearer roles and responsibilities were established, improving team efficiency. We’re thrilled to continue this new chapter, with an enhanced work-life balance for our team. Cheers to the Truii team for making this shift a success! #FourDayWorkWeek #WorkLifeBalance #TeamTruii #TeamCulture #EmployeeExperience #FutureOfWork #Environment #Truii #Innovation #4DayWorkWeek #WFH #WorkingFromHome

Do fewer working hours boost a company's overall productivity? 🤔 One year after 61 companies opted to participate in a four-day week pilot study, 89% of the companies are opting to keep the structure in place. 💥 More efficiency, happier employees and lower turnover rates are among the positive results found by the study, announced this week. ‼️ Flexibility continues to be something most people value and desire. It’s also another way to demostrate your committment to diverse and inclusive ways of working. Perhaps it’s time to consider a new approach to an old model. 🤷🏽♀️ #flexiblework #changethegame #diversityequityinclusion https://lnkd.in/eDUu_vAH

My fear is that four-day work week could be a sort of trojan horse for technology to begin displacing humans. Why? My concern is that the four-day work week focuses the purpose of work purely on productivity. There are many non-productive work activities in the five-day work week that are incredibly valuable - to the worker and organisation. Think workplace learning, creativity and innovation, even socialising and workplace friendships. Juliet B. Schor suggests that if "AI reduces the number of hours that humans need to put in to do something" then we should "reduce working hours". I'm all for reducing workloads and if AI can help, then great. But in reducing working hours, we should still ensure time for those non-productive work activities. In a world where AI is increasingly better at productive output than humans, shouldn't we ensure workers are ready for a world of work where their creative potential is valued more than productivity? #fourdayworkweek https://lnkd.in/gnFjvDSf

Why is the 5 day working week still the norm? In 2022 the UK ran the worlds largest (at the time) four day week trial. Highlights from the trial include; - 39% of employees were less stressed - 71% had reduced levels of burnout - anxiety, fatigue and sleep issues decreased - mental and physical health improved You can read more about that study here https://lnkd.in/emtvP7Nk Combine this data with the strides made by technology including the increasing prevalence of AI. Which a Forbes article said could give us back 40% of our time! https://lnkd.in/ezB2C6n5 If we're working smarter, can't we also be working shorter?! I was fortunate to work at a company who introduced a 9/day fortnight, and I'm now self employed, in part to enable the flexibility I want as a mum of 2 young kids. Through both experiences, I've learnt that to enable a shorter working week, we need to change our approach. Here's three things I'm doing to optimise my time; Meetings - All about reducing here where possible. Reducing - travel time (can it be done remotely?), amount (this is about saying no), time (schedule shorter meetings, pre-plan your agenda) Productivity - Using a physical timer to help with blocks of focus time, leaving my phone in another room Automating - still a work in progress for me but I'm tracking repetitive tasks to see where I can automate and will be using some of my time to look into how AI can help here. I'd love to hear what others are doing...and any tips on automating please share! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I’m Nat 👋 and I’m passionate about helping start-ups & small biz grow through diversifying their marketing mix. ♻️ Repost if this resonates & follow for weekly posts

The myth of the 40-hour workweek: Productivity in the digital age We've all been conditioned to accept it: the 40-hour workweek. It's been the gold standard for so long, but in our digital age, is it still relevant? I don't think so. Here's the thing—the 40-hour week was designed for factory workers in the industrial era. But we're not assembling Model Ts anymore, are we? Most of us are knowledge workers, and our productivity isn't measured by time spent at a desk, but by the quality of our output. In fact, research suggests that most people are only truly productive for about 3-4 hours a day. The rest? Some of us have gotten good at looking busy while scrolling through cat memes. Our digital tools have revolutionized how we work. We can accomplish in hours what used to take days. So why are we still clinging to this outdated model? For years I’ve been implementing a more flexible approach with the companies I work with. We focus on outcomes rather than hours. And you know what? Productivity goes up, stress goes down, and people actually enjoy coming to work (most days). Here's what we've learned: 1. Quality over quantity: It's not about how long you work, but what you achieve. 2. Flexibility boosts creativity: Some people are morning larks, others are night owls. Let them work when they're at their best. 3. Rest is productive: Time away from work often leads to our biggest breakthroughs. Of course, this doesn't mean we work less. Sometimes we work more when a project demands it. But it does mean we work smarter. Has anyone else challenged the 40-hour norm in their workplace? What's been your experience? Any tips for making the transition? Let's rethink productivity for the digital age. After all, time is our most precious resource—shouldn't we use it wisely? #productivityhacks #futureofwork #worklifebalance #digitaltransformation

Thinking a 4-day workweek is too good to be true? Guess again! 🌟 #WorkplaceInnovation is no longer a distant dream but a reality at forward-thinking firms. Time for family, passions, and rest. The result? A more motivated, creative, and loyal workforce. 🔹 But, it's not a one-size-fits-all. What do you look for in a company to ensure it aligns with your values? In today's fast-paced world, finding a company that aligns with my values is crucial. One of the key indicators is a commitment to innovative work arrangements, like the 4-day work week without reduced pay. To me, this isn't just another trending work idea without substance; it's a transformative approach that benefits employees, teams, and companies alike. For me, it’s similar to remote work. So why does a 4-day work week matter to me? Let’s start with the data… Consider Microsoft Japan's experiment in 2019 that showed a 40% increase in productivity with a 20% reduction in work hours (World Economic Forum). Let me rephrase this for you. Employees working 80% of their normal hours were operating at 140% of their original productivity levels. That’s pretty impressive, and likely surprising to many. This isn't just about working less; it's about working smarter. An investor and start-up guru said a similar thing: “It’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter.” And I totally agreed then, and still do. It is one of the reasons I am so excited about generative AI. Reaping it’s benefits are all about working smarter. A few mutual benefits for both companies and employees include: Increased Productivity: A shorter work week can lead to more focused and efficient work. Employees are less likely to experience burnout, leading to higher quality output. Improved Well-being: According to a UK pilot study, participants reported lower stress levels and fewer sick days, with a 65% reduction in stress-related absences (Scientific American, UK Research and Innovation). This translates to happier, healthier employees who are more engaged and committed. Alignment with Core Values: Companies that prioritize employee well-being demonstrate their commitment to their core values. This is not just a PR move; it's a tangible way to show ME and YOU we are valued. For companies and recruiters looking for candidates who value innovation and efficiency, embracing a 4-day work week is a powerful signal. It communicates to me a commitment to modern work practices supported by data and employee sentiment, demonstrating benefits to everyone involved. So what company practices are you looking for that align with your values? #4DayWorkWeek #Productivity #WorkLifeBalance #EmployeeWellbeing #FutureOfWork
