“We’ve gone from yellow to red.” This quote from the article seems prudent. “Large load projects” are coming onto the grid driven by sudden rise in demand from computing needs of AI and crypto mining. It’s very expensive and time-consuming to build out more energy supply. So in the meantime, cheaper, and flexible and already existing demand side resources (batteries, smart loads, VPPs, etc) can be optimized to fill in the gaps. Glad to see that policymakers are requiring these new large load projects to commit to community benefits and push for 100% renewable fuel sources for the projects. https://lnkd.in/eCZxiVtv

Today, Energy Plug has entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding with Power Touch Corp, a Taiwan-based company and leading vendor of Asus’ Artificial Intelligence and Internet Data Centre (IDC) hardware, to provide power allocations for IDCs for AI, heavy compute and crypto mining. Driven by the growing demand for AI and machine learning technologies, data centres are expected to consume 13% of all global electricity annually by 2030. Through this MOU, Energy Plug intends to provide the excess power resulting from Canadian battery energy storage programs to support the operations of Power Touch’s network of AI and Internet Data Centres, enabling the continued growth of its AI operations. #quantumcomputing is certainly coming to the enterprise! Investments into the sector by oil majors and banking institutions (see other news) show that enterprises are now looking at it seriously. I was pleased to visit a quantum computing facility that was deployed in a commercial data center and what struck me as counterintuitive is the low energy consumption of QCs compared to legacy compute…given the energy requirements for AI, my personal prediction is that energy efficiency may be as big, or bigger, driver of adoption as quantum supremacy in compute /utility…QCs such as OQCs have a threshold energy requirement for cooling but marginal qubits add minimal energy consumption. QCs will also need to work in tandem with Hewlett Packard Enterprise supercomputers and our award winning #quantumsafe #5G networks!!

Bitcoin miners, cooling systems, and power suppliers are among the expanding list of data center acquisition targets in the US and beyond. Amazon’s acquisition of a data center campus from Talen Energy for USD 650m in March is an example of the type of deals that tech firms will seek to shore up their energy needs.
