The steel sector emits 11% of global CO2. To meet rising demand and cut emissions, we need to transform steel production.    This new report, developed by the Green Hydrogen Catapult and RMI highlights how green iron corridors—producing iron with green hydrogen in renewable-rich areas and shipping it to traditional steelmaking regions—could revolutionize the industry.    Restructuring half of primary steelmaking to use green iron could save > $25 billion annually across the 10 highest priority importers at today's prices, which translates to a savings of $80-125 per ton of steel. Further, fast-tracking corridor opportunities between existing and emerging iron exporter regions to the EU and Asia could abate an annual ~30 million tons of CO2 by 2030.     This approach promises cost savings, efficiency, and economic benefits for both importing and exporting countries, and will help the steel sector move away from coal and toward near-zero-emissions steel. To lower carbon emissions in heavy industry and transport, we need clear and rigorous standards for clean hydrogen.    This report, developed by the Green Hydrogen Catapult and the Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2 with analysis led by RMI underscores the importance of robust measuring, monitoring, and verification of emissions to ensure that clean hydrogen can lead to national decarbonization objectives.     Why are clear standards so critical?  🔹 The potential for emissions reductions from hydrogen depends on its production method: green hydrogen, made with renewable energy, can achieve near-zero emissions, while blue hydrogen relies on efficient methane leakage controls and permanent storage of captured carbon.  🔹 Accurate measuring and effective monitoring and verification throughout the hydrogen value chain are crucial to ensure robust and accurate standards.  🔹 To assess hydrogen’s carbon intensity, we need government and international organizations to address gaps such as incomplete life-cycle emissions assessments and inconsistent market definitions to ensure true decarbonization and a level playing field.    Hy Stor Energy is proud to be part of the work pushing for robust and accurate standards to drive the clean hydrogen economy forward.     Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gPy7BH3F   #CleanHydrogen #Hydrogen #CleanEnergy #EmissionsAccounting #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #HydrogenPolicy
