US CEA/Precision Ag/Protected Ag Catalyst, Connector, and Leader | Government Affairs | Economic Development | Student Outreach | Investment
Happy Friday, folks! It's that time of year. College football is in full swing, harvests are underway, and we have the 3rd iteration of #CEASummitEast, brought to you by our good friends at Indoor Ag-Con! I'm super amped to join colleagues on our panel as we humbly talk further about some considerations as this thing continues to grow in the US market. Of course y'all know me, so there will be a #southeastern flavor to my perspective! On top of the education, event, table-tops and panels, there's a wonderful opportunity to network and create bespoke connections. Again, many of y'all know me, and what I do, so don't be shy, and come chat with us! Priva Priva North America Priva Horticulture Jack Maruna Jennifer Waxman, CEA Adam Wright Desmond R. Co-Founder of IDEAS, home of the UK Fast Growth Index, the UK Startup Awards, the Great British Entrepreneurs Awards and Ideas Fest.
The Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government is looking to "wipe out family farms just to tick a box" That is the view of Ioan Humphreys, a young Welsh farmer whose family have been working their land for 120 years. Ioan, and the entire farming industry in Wales, is being asked to change the way they farm by the Welsh Government, including planting trees on land that should be used for food production, if they are to continue to get support. As someone who is proud to come from the Llyn Peninsula where farming is a way of life, the video below is heartbreaking. Of course, every industry including farming, should be looking to contribute to the drive towards net zero but surely the best people to develop solutions to address this is the farming community itself rather than having to deal with the complex bureaucracy outlined in the link below https://lnkd.in/e9gW_SMy At a time when Welsh politicians are fighting to save jobs at the biggest industrial contributor to greenhouse gases in the UK, why aren't they taking this self-imposed threat to farming seriously? Rather than imposing this after a pointless "consultation" exercise, I would urge them to sit down with the farming community and to come up with practical solutions that work for everyone. For example, Lloyd James recently suggested that with over 100,000ha (nearly 250,000ac) of land in Wales being covered by bracken, this is one obvious opportunity to increase woodland cover without compromising agricultural capacity. And I am sure there are many other practical ways to do this without destroying the agricultural sector. But if they don't and continue on this path, then try to imagine a Wales without farming, a Wales without the ability to produce its own food, and a complete way of life wiped out because of bureaucracy We are better than this as a nation. https://lnkd.in/eJR_HEdr

Experienced CEO/MD | Transformational Business Leader | Driving Innovation, Growth & Strategic Partnerships
It’s very flattering to be listed in the HortWeek Power List 2024, in such esteemed company. But really, who actually has the power to transform the landscape for British growers? Let me propose three low-cost agenda items for Sir Mark Spencer MP. 1. Fixing the border control process for phytosanitary controls for the £770m of plants and plant products. The “world’s most effective border” is burdensome and costly, and fails in design and execution. 2. Create an efficient and proportionate regulatory system for seed treatments and other plant protection products. The UK is not getting products which are approved for overseas growers. Are we serious about food security? 3. Ensuring proposed legislative changes to peat usage isn’t a catastrophic cliff-edge for British growers and retailers. Thank you Sir Mark. The whole industry is here to help! #horticulture #hortweek Matthew Appleby
