The Controversy making international headlines: Is the Carbon Footprint of the 2024 Olympics really compromised by Hydrogen? An Open Letter in response. The goal of reducing the #carbonfootprint of the #2024ParisOlympics by 50% compared to the 2016 and 2012 Games is a major objective. In this context, 500 Toyota Mirai vehicles, powered exclusively by #hydrogen, and 47 hydrogen buses/coaches from Caetano and GCK, will be used for the transportation of athletes and accredited personnel. This unprecedented implementation has sparked international controversy, with the organizers of the Games being accused of greenwashing. An open letter published this week by 120 scientists made headlines worldwide. This letter presents technical arguments aimed at concluding that hydrogen is a deception. The open letter we are publishing in response (see below) provides additional technical elements that demonstrate, on the contrary, that hydrogen-fueled mobility will be essential for #decarbonization. If you share our conviction that hydrogen will play an essential role, please comment on this post, like it, or share it. It is crucial not to leave the field open, without response, to opponents of hydrogen – often motivated by conflicting interests. In particular, we explain how the upcoming distribution of hydrogen for mobility in 2024 by Haffner Energy Hynoca® technology, provides a factual and scientific rebuttal to the claims made in the first open letter. We can only commend and thank the International Olympic Committee – IOC and the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024, for their resolute choice to promote hydrogen within the framework of the Paris Olympic Games. We also salute Toyota Motor Corporation for their strong industrial commitment to hydrogen. Some concerned colleagues and I are have written an open letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to express our concern that Toyota’s promotion of a hydrogen car is scientifically misaligned with net-zero and will damage the reputation of the 2024 Olympic Games, set to begin next month. https://lnkd.in/e8g4_E2m We are asking the IOC to to enforce that Toyota switches the official Olympics vehicle, and the entire Olympic vehicle fleet, to 100% Battery Electric Vehicles for the 2024 Games. Read the post, read the comments and read the rebuttal open letter. First: What I never understand is why it seems that those working on the battery and grid provided electrification aspects of decarbonisation are so militant in insisting that no other solution will exist. Now that is a wide brush I have used, I know, but generally that seems to be the trend. Where as it seems that in other areas of decarbonisation there tends to be more a #AndNotOr mindset and recognition that we will have multiple solutions across use cases and even within use cases. Second: We need journalists to check the credibility of their sources. Especially on climate related topics as everyone has an opinion, and some are more informed than others. "Climate" commentary is like sports. Everyone fancies themselves as a pundit, but only some are actual professionals. When semi-informed opinion holders are cast as deep experts and fact sayers, we can end up with a skew of the reality, which in turn can hurt the overall spread of education around what can be possible. This only slows down a move away from fossil fuels – which is the common goal. In short, why are we all so great at attacking our own side!! C'mon folks!

Hydrogen has validity and practical contextual applications to reduce climate change. Attempts to deny the validity of hydrogen in general are motivated by incumbent interests. The same interests that benefit from the label ‘green washing’ as a tool to undermine productive low carbon efforts. This use of the Illusory Truth Effect to undermine valid technologies reveals continuing efforts to ‘paint everything with the same brush’ in order to undermine rival technologies. It most certainly does not represent true low carbon transition interests. Energy transition technologies, particularly hydrogen, require augmented coverage of examples of practical successful solutions, rather than the hitherto focus of rebutting invalid fallacies, launched by incumbent interests or rival ‘green technologies’. There is no shortage of technological examples of the validity of hydrogen energy applications. These require regular and diverse means of ‘easily digestible’ and eloquent exposure. Thereby enabling a greater range of people to understand the role of hydrogen in environmentally-relevant contexts.

The #ParisOlympics2024 is aiming to become the "greenest-ever Games" by reducing 50% of its #carbonfootprint. 🚀 New altitude world record while running on HIF eFuels! Our carbon neutral #eFuels produced at the HIF Haru Oni facility powered a Porsche 911 (Porsche AG) on its mission to reach the maximum altitude a car could achieve, and it was succesfully accomplished by the racing driver, Romain Dumass in the world's highest volcano: Ojos del Salado, Chile 🗻. 6.734 metres above sea level were reached and our eFuels proved its capability performing in the most extreme and demanding conditions imaginable. eFuels are drop-in fuels made from green hydrogen and recycled CO2 that can replace fossil fuels now. #HIFGlobal #netzeronow #eFuel #renewableenergy

Universal Hydrogen, which has made its presence known in the past with the development of a hydrogen-powered regional transport aircraft, has now succeeded in testing the largest liquid hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system to date. The successful test has predisposed Universal Hydrogen to begin passenger transport with liquid hydrogen powered aircraft by 2026. Over 120 scientists, academics, and engineers have urged the Paris Olympics to switch from Toyota Mirai hydrogen cars to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). They argue hydrogen cars are inefficient, requiring three times more renewable electricity and being at least three times more expensive to run than BEVs. Additionally, most hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels, increasing emissions by 30-50%.
